I know that the idea of limiting queue sizes will give people a negative gut reaction, but I still suspect that it's an idea PGI should look at.

The main purpose for this suggestion would actually be to speed up queues. Let's say that the limit was 12/12 for any given planet. When an individual opens up their Faction tab to see about CW - they can very very quickly see any queues that are below 12, but have some in queue, and jump right in. Same for a small group. Got 2 players? Look on the faction tab for any planet which has 2 open queue slots.

This would also spread out attacks to more planets. AND it would effectively deal with the zerg rush for a Clan/House just spamming attackers on a single planet for the final hour, to win through uncontested attacks.

The queue wouldn't have to be 12/12 - it might be 24/24, or even 36/36. The exact number could be decided by PGI. The "fiction" used for such limits is simple: there are only so many Drop Ships available.

no what they should actually do is remove this sill 60+ (we don't want you to have accurate numbers of ppl playing the game) junk and show the actual que numbers so people know if it's worth queuing or not.

Then to deal with the zerg mechanic, they remove auto win games if 12 people are on a planet (in game) or in que as the planet is actively being fought over.

If nobody ques up on the defense side for x mins then an auto win game may be generated this moves the auto win mechanic from a negative aspect of having a smaller population than your neighbor thus allowing them to swarm free wins while your trying to defend and moves it into the "you still need to defend planets" section

I just want a "play now" button that queues me, and anyone else that clicks it, up for a match. Any planet. I don't care.

Keep the ability to choose a planet so that the strategists can play their territorial conquest game, but give me a way to just jump into a queue and know that there are other people in it. On both teams.

Several factions have ceasefires with some of their neighbours and only have 1 active front.

Example of a possible fix:
Nobody playing on the Liao - Marik border, no action needed
60+ in both queues on the Davion - Liao border worlds = start open a fresh world on that border and halve those queues.

All it needs is a mechanism that prevents a faction taking advantage of a huge imbalance in numbers.

I think The Cheese has the best solution for lowering wait times AND preventing ghost drops. Anytime I end up in a ghost drop, the entire group is upset because we came to play the game, not just change colors on planets that mean nothing in the current state of CW. Adding a button that will send you to the queue with the lowest estimated wait time of any planet your faction can contest will get people more matches faster, and I think it will take ghost drops from the 2-3% Russ tweeted down to <1%.

I kinda agree with this tbh. theres 15 planet segments, so limit queues to 180 players per side, and lift the cap for joining a queue to only when all available queues for that player are at least 80% capacity. It would hopefully spread players around more of the available planets and make for a more dynamic galaxy map.

It would put an end to the petty rage from Davions being attacked by Steiners and Ghost Bears being attacked by Wolf because of some imaginary treaty they have that you never actually signed up to, for example.
