No. It's underpowered, expensive, and really needs a particular playing style to get it to work well. I would look towards a cheaper and more easy going mech.

I'm more of a laser user

My starting mech line were the dragons. Decent balance of hardpoints (EE/BB) and good weight class to get a feel for the game. I still play my DRG-1C almost every day.

Subtle changes from the stock loadout.

It's basic, but it does the job. Best if used to hunt lights.

This other change is a bit nastier against whatever you might encounter.

But as a first mech this thing is obscenely expensive. Well, all clan mechs have that initial wall to climb over. IS mechs are just as expensive over time, but you don't need it right at the gate to get through.

Is your heart really set on a Clan mech?

If so, I would suggest the Stormcrow or Timberwolf. Both have very effective "Laser vomit" builds and both are excellent mechs.

If you're not opposed to IS mechs for a heavy, I'd suggest the Thunderbolt as a heavy that has variants that do lasers very well. If you want to go with a medium, the Hunchback 4P boats medium lasers like a champ, although other Hunchback variants are ballistic or missile centered. The Griffin also has a couple variants with laser quirks that perform well.

The 9SE does Large Pulse Lasers well (mech quirks) and the 5SS does Medium Pulse Lasers very well (mech quirks again)

EDIT: An excellent choice with relatively low cost is the Cataphract 1X with 1xAC20 + 5xMedium Laser and a big standard engine.

oh LORD, if you can stomach an IS mech, the stalker 4n is a laser monster, simple 4 large and chain fire till the cows come home, assuming you didn't mistake them for clan mechs and fry them into carbon chips.
its my number one kill to death ratio mech @ 1to3...or was till I wasted time in CW, seems its dropped to 2.5 kills per death now, still my monster to go mech when I feel the need to melt things
the quirks made it just OP in my opinion, and I love it

oops...missed the last post, LOL

This seems to be pretty much the most common build for the 5SS at the moment.

You'll want to get the Medium Pulse Cooldown 5 Module and Medium Pulse Range 5 module to really maximize the build.

Another good laser barf mech is the Hunchback 4P.

Though the Tbolt is a bit heavier and thus better armoured, so I'd stick with it.

I saw a Hunchback 4P demolish a team yesterday (unfortunately it was my team he demolished  ) running a mix of ML and MPL. Just kept corner peeking and took out 8 of my team, ended up with 1200 damage. I couldn't even be mad about it he played so well.

NO!!!!!

For heavies, good beginner mechs are CTFs IMO.

My thoughts? The only problem is that it's a type of mech that mainly has one BFG, or able to group a good amount of weapons (lrm or srm/streak boat), and it's omnipods are very difficult to use if you are new to clan mechs or even to the game. This mech on a level on 1-10 on difficulty to pilot is a 6, in that it requires some knowledge of the game in order to be used very well. The stock loadout is not very good either. Try going for what the other guys said, Thunderbolt is a good starter in my opinion.
