Starts: January 16th @ 10:00AM PST

Ends: January 19th @ 10:00AM PST

It's time for the first event of the new year! Do you have what it takes to play "Like a Champion"?

You may recall the "To The Victors..." event we ran back in November. The survival criteria made it one of our most challenging events yet, and there was a clear shift in tactics over that weekend as a response.

It's time for another hard-fought challenge. You won't need to survive the match to get a point in this one, but victory is still a key component.

In order to score 1 point you must meet all three of the following criteria in a match:
  • Get 1 or more Kill, get 1 or more Assist, and Win the match via either the Primary or Secondary objectives.
If you have what it takes to play "Like a Champion" this weekend, there's an enticing reward waiting to be claimed when you achieve 30 points: the Cataphract CTF-3D(C) Champion 'Mech (complete with an associated MechBay).

To help make your fight for victory even more rewarding, you will be automatically rewarded with 3 days of Premium Time upon achieving your first 3 points.

This event applies to all game modes (including Community Warfare) and any group size. Private matches are not eligible.
  • 3 points = 3 days of Premium Time
  • 30 points = Cataphract CTF-3D(C) Champion 'Mech (Mech Bay included)

View your overall progress here.

Obviously I love the free stuff, and it's a good challenge for the new year, but wow the bar is set really high this round! 30 matches with a kill, assist, and win? Gonna be a rough run! :)

I seem to remember that the 20 wins/assists/kills last time was a tough nut to crack, but for a Phact I have to give it a go !!

I like the terms of this one much better.... the survive rule of the last one really made many very timid on the field. Sure it was different, and some didn't go over board, but others just sat back and waited. I will try for the cat I guess... I have never piloted one or bought them, wanted to pick them up but had to many other mechs I wanted first.

Good luck everyone, see ya on the battle field.

It was a tough nut to crack because you had to survive. About half my wins were disqualified because my mech had been destroyed. Removing the survival requirement but upping the required number of matches seems fair to me.

I'm hoping that solo (group of 1) games count? The wording isn't clear.

My favourite part of the previous challenge was the survival criteria. My least favourite part was the 30 points needed.

I really wish we had more challenges where survival was a goal. More focus on skill, less focus on grinding. This challenge won't actually be hard, but it will require some grinding.

Guess I'll be playing over the next couple of days. -_- Free stuff is difficult to pass up, and it is the only Cataphract I never owned.

The issue with survival was "Hide in a corner and expect everyone else to play..."
This devolved into everyone hiding and a duck hunt for the other team.
<--See from 8 minutes onward... especially the last enemy at the end.
That, unfortunately, is what the last challenge presented to a lot of people.

NP, easiest challenge yet. I just have to carry the team. The only hard part will be getting an assist with all of my kills....

Interesting and to me it would also mean about 1M of since I would sell my current 3D for the (C) but it will be hard to achieve because Sunday I will be volunteering all day, then Sunday I'll be a bit busy with something else and Monday I will go to work like many...

This left me with tomorrow, I'm luck enough to not work on Fridays so I would have plenty of time but 10:00 for you is 13:00 for me this mean half the day will be gone when it starts, then at 15:00 I will need to leave. I cannot do miracle in 2 hours.

Oh well.

That, unfortunately, is what the last challenge presented to a lot of people.

I know it happened, but people are going to abuse the system no matter what. When you raise the bar to the point of 30 victories in a weekend (i.e. 60 matches played if you have a 1.0 WLR) it means people are going to do whatever they can to reduce the grind. That leads to griefing.

Lose 2 guys on your team? Probably won't win this one. Suicide, disconnect, find a new match.
Do you have 1 kill and the score is 3-0 or 4-0? Your team will probably win no matter what. Suicide, disconnect, find a new match.

60 matches that all last 15 minutes amounts to 15 hours of play. If they all last 5 minutes, that's 5 hours of play. I'm talking about hours of actual play time, not including waiting for matchmaker. If you include CW matches, the time required is just through the roof, probably about 20-30 hours of play. A lot of people are going to do what they can to reduce that time, so they have a few hours this weekend to spend on real life.

These massive grinds always leave a lot of fans exhausted and burned out.

Very true. After doing this one I'll probably need another break of several weeks.
