I've been playing since 1989, and have alway had a soft spot for 3rd and 4th Succession War thru early Clan Invasion gameplay. Always found it waaaaay to easy to design mechs that never overheated with Lostech and Clan Gear, which took a lot of fun out of it for me.

Faves are:
Light: COMMANDO
Medium: GRIFFIN
Heavy: WARHAMMER (my first mech, still love em)
Assault: STALKER
usually in custom modified versions.

Howzabout you? What makes em special for you?

Firestarter - i actually hated the design, but it always delivered. So I learned to love it.
Phoenix Hawk - Same as firestarter. Hated it, but learned to love because it delivered

Centurion
Catapult
Orion - Heaviest design I was willing to pilot on a consistent basis. Screw assault mechs.

Is there any light better than the raven? I think not.

My choices are below:

Light: Commando (Loved it since using in MW2: MERCS)
Medium: None really but Hunchback is close enough
Heavy: Warhammer (First heavy I liked since the original MechWarrior) and Catapult close second
Assault: Battlemaster (MechWarrior original favorite)

I know this thread is about pre Clan Invasion but I want to mention my favorites anyways:

Light: Couger
Medium: Toss up between Bushwacker and Shadow Cat
Heavy: Of course the iconic Timberwolf (Mad Cat) with the the Hellbringer (Loki) and Summonr (Thor) as my other alternatives
Assault: Atlas (with Clan Tech) or Blood Asp

Light: Spider. Great scout Mech.

Medium: Wolverine. Tough medium, well armed if you took the large laser variants.

Heavy: Thunderbolt. The TDR-5SS is amazingly tough and carries a lot more firepower than you'd expect in a sixty-five tonner.

Assault: Banshee, specifically the BNC-3S. 95 tons of mayhem.

Cataphract
Catapult
Awesome
Longbow

As you can tell, I'm pretty happy with the announced mechs.

(I have VERY little knowledge of the backstory and origins of the MW franchise mind you - I LOVE the game and gameplay though from MW2 and on though).

Inner Sphere
Light: Raven
Medium: Uziel (It would just HAVE to be an Uziel - can't explain why)
Heavy: Dragon
Assault: Atlas (Fafnir when it comes around)

Clan:
Light: Cougar (I've got a build that has yet to be beat in MW4 Mercs)
Medium: Hellhound
Heavy: (IDK really)
Assault: Kodiak (for cold climates (8x Medium Lasers, 2x SRM 10, SRM 20, LBX 20) = one pissed off Bear, Diashi for just about everything else other than maybe a Mad Cat Mk 2.

I'm an old school Grognard so my favorites are all from the old 3025 days.

Light: Locust 1E Fast enough to run from danger and with enough endurance and firepower to harass the rear for as long as necessary.

Medium: Phoenix Hawk I started playing in ’85 and I’ve never lost my love of the Super Veritech. J

Heavy: Thunderbolt The TDR 5SS is a nice mix of range and close combat punch. A close second is the Ostsol, so ugly that most people underestimated it.

Assault: Awesome 8Q The original unstoppable juggernaut.

I've been playing since it was called Battledroids in the early 80s and my light mech of choice (and over all favorite) has always been the Locust. Gotta luv that 8/12 movement. :)
Medium: Shadowhawk
Heavy: Archer
Assault: Banshee

Uziel is an IS mech (Specifically Steiner), but it's POST-Clan (3063).

Light: Panther
Medium: No Clue actually, but yes, Hunchback is nice.. once i have killed a undamaged Timberwolf with a headshot of AC20
Heavy: Grasshopper
Assault: Banshee, even the non-armed one, once in a Battle i punched several smaller Mechs to Death, it was so much fun, i often use Banshees

Hope they put these in too..

Light: Raven (electronics and recon, speed to see and get out of there)
Medium: I always found them an awkward class so I'll pass, until the Clans bring in the Nova
Heavy:Catapult (I like shooting a lot of missiles at once)
Assault: Atlas (purely aesthetic for me)

Marauder, Nightstar, Devastator, Mauler.

The mauler in particular is a light mech trasher with his AC/2s

Nightstar and Devastator are great against heavys and assaults and slower mediums but fast lights and mediums can cause huge headaches.

And marauder simply for being marauder XD

For introductory tech, one of my favorites is the standard Catapult CPLT-C1. I also like the classic Atlas AS7-D if I can get the darned thing in range. However, I have to say that my favorite intro tech mech is the Banshee BNC-3S. It drops from 4/6 to 3/5 and uses the tonnage it gains for, perhaps, the best intro tech weapons loadout I've yet seen and enough heat sinks to use them properly. It'll fire two PPCs and an AC/10 as it closes (bracket-firing the PPCs), then when it gets close, it walks right up to melee range , unloads with the AC/10, a mass of lasers, and an SRM6, then tops it off with two punches.

Favorite pre-Clan mech? Devastator, followed by Nightstar and Pillager. I do have a marked preference for assault mechs, though. (See the Steiner fist to the left.)
