I wanna keep it (as a trophy), money isn't an issue so I'm not that hard pressed for extra mechbays.

Why would you sell the champion mech and then buy the same mech when you can just buy the XL 280 engine and rebuild it for less?

I think he meant that I should go with the non-champion to get the quirks.
Champion mechs get quirks. It's just that the Cataphract 3D is the only IS mech without quirks.
So if you sell the champion and buy the regular Cataphract 3D again don't expect it to have quirks.

The 3D does not have any quirks.

My alt build for this is a std 320 (I think) with an AC20 and 4 med lasers and 2 or 4 jumpjets.
It works ok for brawling situations

It was considered one of the best mechs a long time ago. PGI decided not to quirk it for some reason. Makes no sense to me since it is not that good now that other mechs have come along and jump sniping is pretty much dead.

Ummm...No. That would be stupid. The 3D(C) gives bonus XP- that translates into bonus GXP as well. Why would you sell a mech that gives bonuses so you could purchase a mech with no bonuses, that is identical in every other way? Hell, the Champion doesn't even have an expensive engine to make the sale worthwhile.

Why handicap yourself
IS were given quirks because they were not competing with clans .
Un quirked IS mech?
I'm not feeling it.
@davers XP boost isn't worth much on a handicapped IS mech no quirks.
I'm not saying its completely worthless or unplayable but taking that into battle your making things harder on yourself.

Sorry, maybe you misquoted yourself. You said "sell the champion 3d, and then buy a regular 3d if you want a phract".

The knuckle dragging arms, wide torso's don't help it and putting in an xl in my experience is bad for it.
Awesome dakka tho in the right circumstances.Ilya was my first mastered mech

XLs make a Mech a bit of a glass hammer. you can save weight for more weapons but lose that side torso... So How good are you with XLs in your Mechs is the deciding factor I would think.
