Mechs You Never Thought You'd Love / Mechs You /did/ Think You'd Love

For me, mechs I'd never thought I'd love are cicadas and lolcusts
Coming from someone who is used to ac20s and 64kph, they were a big transition for me! But just recently, someone called me a god tier lolcust pilot when i rode atop a stalker to death! Boy are they fun mechs!
Ones I mistakenly Perceived as soulmates have to be awesomes and firestarters
Awesomes are misleadingly named... wide target, slow movement... ech.... fast death. Firestarters... hm... don't feel fun to pilot, for some reason!
What about y'all?

Hated the Thunderbolts for a while after buying Phoenix Pack... Still am struggling with the 5S... (It's quirks don't help..) ... 9SE though... Very good surprise. Quad Large Pulse's even before quirks have been amazing. Very playable, quite fun, always pleasant.
Disappointed... every.. meta mech... ever. They are low risk, low reward mechs. Not fun to play... High risk, high reward lends itself to more excitement... since you more easily get those amazing 1000+ damage games. (Oh... and any mech renowned as a good brawler... my gosh that never gets me the damage I need because they need to be in the firing lane of the enemy... >_> )
Most notable disappointment... the medium mech meta king... the Shadowhawk... My gosh... It is terrible. Given... pre- mass AC nerf... I used 2 ac2's and was able to pull off some stupid scores for that sort of build... but after that... I'd prefer having a locust on my team... at least they can outperform what is expected of them...

My TDR-5S worked just fine pre-quirk, and all those laser/energy quirks do just fine for it. (Note that my front/back torso armor allocation is not as listed.) Shield with your right side (protect the MLs and ACs) and mind your heat scale, you'll be fine.

Thought I'd like the banshee - bought the 3e, but it is so painfully slow and lumbering for my tastes. Maybe i'll adjust.

Surprised how much I enjoy the victor from the challenge a while back. It's a really solid, fun mech.
Don't enjoy my Thunderbolt 9s as an erppc machine, but I really enjoyed the thunderbolts pre-quirks more.
Haven't enjoyed my Ember, though I liked the firestarters a lot pre-quirk. Haven't used them much post quirks.

Figured they would be OK for Stock Mech Night. But that would be about it. Too slow, to fragile, etc, for "Real" play.
Funnily enough, I feel they kinda suck for Stock Matches. But they are tankier (if you know how to twist) than most people realize, and extremely nimble, while packing sufficient punch. And they jump rather nice.
They won't replace my Hunchback 4G, but have totally supplanted my Griffins and Shadowhawks, something I never would have anticipated.
Now, unless I'm goofing around, I am almost exclusively in HBK, CN9s and VNDs when I run IS Mechs.
(For Clans, I expected I would love Summoners, because I always have. Despite their relative level of suck compared to the other 3 Clan Heavies. I didn't realize I would like driving a stock Prime so much though. )

On the positive side of things... I don't really buy mechs if I don't think I'll enjoy them, so I haven't tried any that I thought would suck but ended up doing well.

One of the first Mechs that really clicked with me was that massive, overkill laser Hunchback the 4P. That pure, energy boating monstrosity. Medium lasers. The Champion Trial is almost exactly what I ran. Whether it was viable or not, I loved the alpha potential and it reinforced a hit and run style which was right up my street.
I thought The Nova was going to be the Clan 4P. This time though, the magic just wasn't there. I love making mechs that 'shouldn't' work pull their weight's worth. I like the Challenge. I started in and mastered out the Commandos of all things, pre-quirks.
For the life of me, I still struggle to make a functional Nova. Even Mastered they feel like more luck than skill.
I can hold my own using the 'prescribed' builds, but even with the 30% C-bill boost from the Pre-order pack I still cannot bring myself to play them much. Now they mostly just sit in my garage, awaiting the Clan Quirkening.

Everyone waited for the Orions and what did we get? Quickies. So bought them. That day I started to learn how to play with one leg... damn those things...
Played the heck out of them, always grumpy that I didn't get my Orions, always in a bad mood. And eventually got the Hero, too. So I could hate not only 3 but 4 mechs.
Everytime I'm in a bad mood I get out in one of my Quicklegged so I can hate that mech once again. Doesn't matter if I'm good in it or not, it is just a trashy mech, even if you can do big damage in it.
Yeah... hate them, all of them. I think I'll run them tonight, it's time again...

I go for good looking designs. Cataphracts aren't pretty.
So when I got the Cataphract for the 1st time, I was surprise the amount of dmg it could wallop.
So yea, Cataphract 3D, Good

Fought endlessly to earn C-bills to get one of my fav Assault from the boardgame.
Turns out to be a bullet-and-missile magnet.
Sold it almost immediately.

Cicadas, Hunchbacks, Warhawk, Stormcrow, Stalker
Mechs I was excited for but don't like
I can't really think of any. I've got a colelction of mechs I've not really given much of a chance. Vindicator, Dragon, Shadow Hawk, Blackjack. I guess I bought them and I don't play them so they must nto be clicking with me. The Nova gets a special mention. I loved playing that in the Clan Preview but hated it when it went live with the nerfs.

Orion, all of them disappointed me after recently trying to level them up.
Stalker. I had never really liked assault mechs but this one is great in most of its variations, especially Misery.

Now with the FRR sale I bought some Awesomes, thought I would love the 9M. An assault going 83 with 3 ERPPCs, sounds pretty fun, but the Awesome is definitely not xl-friendly. The 8Q works better, but being kinda slow and only armed with a single sort of gun isn't really all that exciting.
On the other hand, I by mistake (sort of), bought the 8V. Tried lots of sthings, hated them all, what a piece of junk! But then I figured, lrm boat? 3xLRM15+A, TAG and 3 mlas has given me a mech that has a W/L ratio of 3 and a K/D ratio of 1.4! (Though only 61 games played, but the no. of games tends to be bugged in the stats, so it's probably more.)
I dunno, it's just soooo good at supporting the smaller mechs that it's a joy to play, and I normally don't enjoy LRM boats. At least not unless they go at least 80+ kmph.

'Mechs I thought I'd love but have given me nothing but pain in return - Highlander. Much loved TT staple, cannot get them working well enough and have all but given up save the Heavy Metal because of its hero status. Even then its rare to get more than two songs a battle. Honorable mention for Firestarter, which everybody convinced me the Ember was pre-quriks the most deadly 'Mech alive. I hate all of them and do poorly in them.
