Recently bought 2 Jagermechs (S and DD). I thought they would be great, with all their ballistic hardpoints and high-mounted weapons.
But so far I completely hate this mech. It feels totally useless. Even with a big XL-engine it is so slow and cumbersome. Add on top, that it has no lateral arm movement, and I am dead, as soon as something going faster than 80 kph comes close to me.
In lots of matches I fail to do 200 damage with these mechs. And I can reliably do 300+ damage with my Hunchbacks, even when the team sucks.
I will stick to it for now. Maybe it will get better after some time. But I am really disappointed.

A mech that was a positive surprise for me, was the Kitfox. I heard previously, that clan lights suck, because they are slow compared to IS lights and have big hitboxes.
I bought it anyway, because it was the cheapest clan mech available at that time. I just wanted to try some clan weapons and see how the omnipods work and such.
And yes, you can´t play it like an IS light, crotchhugging and dancing around enemy assaults. But it is great for long-range-combat. And due to the low weight of clan weapons, it can carry a loadout comparable to some IS mediums or even heavies.

I got very disaponted in Atlases I was really sad coz I wanted to like tham.100 tons of tears.

When I 1st got Cataphracts oh god did I hate tham those were my 1st hate em mechs lol but afther some time I realy got in love with CTF 2X and 3D I say rock solid.

Awesomes I really bought some just to see how bad they are I must say that I like tham Awesome 8Q was one of my best performing mech.

Stormcrow I hate Stormcrow.No I dont but I do.
I got 1 stormcrow on sale "cheapcrow" was my 1st clan mech needed to get one just to get feeling for clan tech. And I hate stormcrow becouze that mech started to pull me on clan side.I never liked mediums untill crow but than that mech is few steps above every medium I ever piloted.

Stalkers are my bigest assault love thou I rarely pilot em lately.Every build I made on stalkers was performing good.I dont have my own meta on stalkers really I change builds setups from time to time and it all works some better some worse but still never got disaponted with chasis..And soon maybe if I see some performance improvements in game Misery will be my 1st hero.

Hated Jagers on TT

Liked Stalkers on TT. Its the turn restrictions that kill the Stalker for me. Load outs can be terrifying but that restricted turn radius kills it for me.

I never thought i'd actually like centurions. After the re-introduction of the CN9-AH, i decided to give that chassis a go... boy its fun... i'm loving the ac20/3xsrm4 combo... i can actually face tank direwolfs in it.

But my all time love... is the atlas. The only and only mech i was piloting before the clans since the close beta.

I thought I would hate Firestarter in comparison to Jenners. I now love how there are 3 very viable Firestarters to run.

I heard nothing good about the Gargoyles since their release. After the Koshi, Ferret, and Hellbringer, I didn't have a lot of hope. But after playing around a bit, I found them to be insanely fun. I love my gargoyles despite all the hate for them.

A mech I thought I would like but ended up hating would be the Catapult A1. was my first Catapult and I really liked the look of them, but after getting it I found it horrible. You see previously, I had bought a Trechuchet and ended up having to sell it because it was horrible (prequirks) so I sold it, and bought the A1, which left me with no money to upgrade. So Was running the A1 Stock, which was ******* horrible. Though after a bit of grinding I bought the K2 and fell in love with the catapult.

Mechs that I never thought I'd love, but do:

*Centurions. I never liked them much. But after I win a Champion A in a challenge, and received a free AH as a gift for playing MWO, I had 2 out of 3 chassis so I figured I might as well ply them and level them.

Now my Centurions are my favorite Medium (even above the Hunchback and Shadow Hawk).

Mechs I thought i'd love, but didn't in the long run:

*Catapults

Saddens me to say this because it is my favorite IS mech. It has been abused and neglected so much by PGI that it is too lackluster for me to play. The K2 lasted the longest, but it keeps getting stiffed in the quirks department.

I still love the Catapult I guess, but it never seems to get played anymore. A relic from a past MWO that doesn't exist anymore.

P.S. The Vindicator is my current project and it is a love/hate relationship currently. I love how good it can be, but it is a specialized one trick pony.

When you can Sniper with those PPCs it is bliss. When you draw too much attention and get rushed, it's a nightmare. Overall, I love it more than hate it. No Regrets!

Stalkers.
They looked clumsy. I've tried one and I didn't liked it. Now, after about 6 months I was deciding what new chassis to master. And I read some guides. And I bought 3f. What a monster. I love it. For me one of the best IS chassis. Now I wait some hero discount to buy Misery.

I will say this. Whether you love or hate the quirk system, it has given some mechs some much needed love.

It is the reason I love the Centurions, and in some way, the reason I lost love for the Catapults. I'm sure it is the reason why some old mechs like the Hunchback, Centurion, and Dragon are making this list.

Never thought I'd love... AS7-D-DC: I was positive that I would dislike everything about it, and I was completely wrong.
Honorable Mention: JR7-F: Never imagined I would prefer it over my Founders JR7-D. Plus it's the only Mech I enjoy playing despite the fact that I'm not very good in it.

Thought that I would love... Jester Catapult: I don't think I've enjoyed a single moment piloting this Mech.
Dishonorable Mention: PROTECTOR Orion: I've had a lot of ups and downs in this Mech, but I feel a bit better about it recently.

What i thought i could never love:

Cataphracts. Those fugly mechs just never did it for me. I got one in a sale, and then got 2 other ones and well... the 3D in a brawler config was and probably always will be my most fun mech to pilot. And the Ilya is just SUCH a good mech too!

What i thought i would love but ended up hating:
Firestarters. Seriously, i know my Commando piloting and i thought to myself: "It looks like a commando. It's as fast. Glorious arm weapons! AND Jump Jets! It will be the better commando!"
And then i got my 3, including the ember and i can't do **** in those mechs. I just always tend to die :(

Quickdraw and Thunderbolt. Could not get either of those mechs to work for me. The Quickdraw especially seemed to explode just for fun.

The Awesome is a mech i really like, on a good match mine have been known to kill seven enemies. The pretty baby on the other hand, easily my worst Awesome but last time i stomped out in it i brawled with a Wolverine and a centurion simultaneously and won and i was using an XL engine. Deaths knell, good but certainly not exceptional. BJ-1X Wubjack surprisingly good. Catapults, some pilots do brilliantly in them but my A1 is a can't be arsed, playing on a low spec laptop mech. Highlighted by again my last game in it where i did something like 400 odd damage and survived to the end with 100% health. My firebrand that is easily my most narrow minded mech when it comes to builds i have about max three different builds that i can use with it. But it still is capable though.

Locust 1E has got to be a star though 6xml and 170 KPH.

Too bad you can't gift owned mechs. I'd gladly trade you my Misery for a Jester. :)

Mechs i love that have a bad reputation (gameplaywise):
Hunchbacks: The 4G was my first mech ever to kill 8 opponents in one fight! (AC20+2ML).
Cicadas: I dont really know why, its just fun to drive them :)

Unsuspected "loving":
Stalker: I hated them them when they came out. Didnt see any use besides LRM-boating (which is not my Style of play). Now i own 3 of them, all mastered, and its allways 85tons of fun to throw them into the fight. Anecdote: Had one match in my Misery in which i killed the last 5 Mechs and turned a 7:11 into a victory!
Orions: They are ugly! they have weird Hardpoints, but esp. my VA is allways fun to drive.

Mechs i should love, but i cant:
Atlas: They are great weaponplatforms, no doubt, but i dont know how to handle them right. I got 4 of them and none is really great.
Jenners/Firestarters: same goes here: They are great and tough opponents (in the right hands), but im just bad in them. Not that i cant drive lights ( i had more fun in Locusts and Comandos!!!) Im overheating constantly and/or run directly into an AC20.

Clanmechs (not much experienced):
Love: Warhawk (woot? are you serious???). Amazing. Just Amazing.
Hate: MadCat (youre joking, right???) I do better in my Catapults! Really! can be i have still to learn how to "love" them...I wanted to love them, because i played one over years in TableTop. Maybe my expectations are too high.

I've been amazed by Locusts! Fun and effective. I thought they were troll-mechs..... They aren't at all! :)

I like to pilot medium, but I've never been able to do something good with BJ :(

Edit: but this thread is only about good or bad surprises, right?

Mech that I though I would love; Cicada.
I enjoy piloting medium mechs and own every medium mech in the game, but this thing... I don't understand it.
Tried drive-by-shooting like a light, but too big to exit safely. Tried ERLL poking like a raven, not satisfying play style. Tried anti-light escort, :notbadobama: wub all the thing! Tried brawling, get laugh at by Jenner F.

Mech I didn't know I would love; Atlas.
As a medium mech pilot, going slower than 70kph makes me feel uneasy.
Got the Atlas-S for free and have some success with it, get 2 more Atlas to complete Master. Fall into love with the pre-quirk Atlas RS (4x LL and LRM10+5), quirk just made it even better.

For me it was SHD-2H.
I played mostly energy/missile mechs be4 and I was like WTF I will do with only 1 energy and 3 balistics on 55t frame...and It turned it is rly XL friendly mech so it was not THAT bad...still I hate ammo based mechs with not enough space for ammo/engine -.-

Mech I think I would love is Bane aka Kraken.100 ton mech with 14 balistic slots or 8 missile slots?YES PLEASE NAOW!!!
