I know this is a game but it's really dumb when someone gets their rocks off knowing they are screwing with a team. About 1 in 10-15 matches, there's always a griefer on my team. I ask the team to report them and maybe they do or they don't but what good is it?

They just make up a free account, use a trial mech, get their account banned and then just turn around and make a new account again. So, banning griefer accounts is all but worthless.

I say, to log into the game you need a valid IP address that is linked to your account. If your IP address shifts every 5 minutes, you know they're using a ghost address. And if they grief you, then you can ban their IP address and they can't make any more account. Is this too hard to put into the game? I have seen many other forums/games ban IP addresses.

changing your IP address takes like 20 minutes. I've used it to get past unfair bans on Gmod, and TF2 (ususally because a mod gets on, is pissed off because their girlfriend or boyfriend broke up with them, and goes on a ban spree).

if a troll wants to troll, they will. Plus account banning prevents them from using any mechs they might own. so If I wanted to start trolling and teamkilling, I would lose all the heros, mechs I've grinded, and my Clan wave 2 mechs, like 300 dollars worth of mechs.

Just giving me an IP ban would stop me for like 40 minutes, then I could just change my IP, log into the same account and keep on trolling.

I don't troll by the way, I was just saying that IP bans only stop those who don't know how to change it.

Log in to router, click on renew IP, *poof* brand new IP.

And linking a specific IP to an account is a terrible idea, what if I move or switch ISPs?

Just curious, but when you say you say "Griefers", what exactly are they doing?

The other risk is if you have two people living in the same house (or in a dorm that does NAT) that you will ban both of them if you target their IP address.

Both solutions (account ban and IP ban) to the problem are not 100% effective unfortunately.

There's no way to ban people in a free to play game. No matter what you do they can always make new accounts. The only more effective measure is charging people for the game so that making new accounts costs money- but then you put off a lot of potential customers and cost the company more than a few people leaving due to griefers.

Yeah, I know. I've seen drama mods have a bad day and freak out and suddenly EVERY one is banned for nothing. Then the head mod has to step in and try to clean up the mess but by that time, most of the damage has already been done.

Griefers are the people at the start of the game that wait a second for you to walk past them so they can Alpha strike you in the rear center torso. Usually, even after people turn around to kill him before he kills you, you get negative XP and c-bills plus then you're down one mech AND either have 1 or 2 people dead or severely crippled too. They usually take a Timberwolf or a Nova to do it since they have huge alpha strike ability.

Well, that's why I said to link everyone's IP address to their accounts.

That's true but only the last set of numbers. The other three sets stay the same, right? I know that makes it trickier to pull off but your IP address shouldn't be changing every hour either.

Aye, I agree. The trial mechs are there to help new people to the game play and and find something they like. While some are underpowered in my opinion, there are a few that are excellent starting mechs. I would hate to have new people start playing and get frustrated because they only do 100 points of damage and die every game.

While I know FTP microtransactions is becoming the new model for a lot of developers to make games with, there's always ONE guy out there that has no life and enjoys the thrill of knowing he ruined someone else's day. The only investment they make is the 10 minutes to create an account while the teammate on his side lost the ability to earn c-bills and XP. I wish there was some sort of investment to making an account that would prevent people from doing this. One solution is having a "training" camp to let you go from lights at first and THEN after a lot of work, having access to heavy and assaults. At least then they have to put in a lot of time to grief people OR limit them to smaller mechs that you can easily kill before they kill you. Not sure though that is something that PGI would want to do though... ;)

1. People's IP addresses change constantly
2. If one person is an ass on a large network then PGI is banning upwards of 20 or more people from playing
3. Anyone can use a vpn or proxy

So no, IP ban is terrible idea, simplistic solution at best

Yeah, if I try to log in on a friend's computer, or attend a LAN party, or move, or get a new internet provider, then my account could be blocked by linking my IP address to my account.

You have a dangerous lack of knowledge on this subject - I'd recommend you refrain from making any similar recommendations until you read a book about networking.
