Timberwolf is not required. It can be done in any 'mech, including tiny ones like blackjacks. The SHD-2K does an exceptionally good job at it (and not being a wussy hidey-hole sniper).
I agree only to an extent. I have had godly, 1100+ annihilations with my BJ-1X. However, it doesn't have the advantages that a Timbie has. Namely:
1) Armor - 156 points more, to be exact
2.) Borked jump animations - still not fixed, used to advantage in tournaments
3.) Firepower - not disputable. Clan laservomit wins, ton for ton.
4.) Jump Jets available on all models - the BJ-1X is the only BJ that is much faster than the TBR, but has no JJ. TBR has no sych limitations.
5.) Clan XL - Hopelessly better than IS XL.
BJ has:
1.) Option for more speed, but only on one model, the 1X at 116kph. The others are locked to 93kph, only 4 more than the TBR.
2.) Higher mounted weapons. A big one, but doesn't come close to changing the disperaty between the two mechs.
3.) Lower duration weapons. LPLs on BJs are their saving grace, as is the AC20 if you're into that.
4.) Smaller model - Helps, but doesn't make up for the IS XL being a deathtrap when against decent opponents.
Your second recommendation, the SHD-2K is well known to me, and along with the SHD-2H was used to allow me to climb to #6 in the IS Medium division. However, I disagree that it is great as anything more than a mid to long range skirmisher and hidey hole sniper. If caught at close range by anything with reasonable brawling capabilities and with a decent pilot, it can't do damage fast enough to come out on top. Timbie doesn't have that problem with LPL and MPL spam.
Arguing that somehow the Timbie isn't an OP god-tier mech is fruitless however at this point. It does almost everything better than any comparable mech.
