So the new patch "fixed" ammo explosions:
  • Notification will no longer say "Unknown has killed player" once a user dies due to an ammo explosion
Unfortunately, since the graphics and the sound for an ammo explosion is non-existent (or at least unnoticeable), now there is not any good way to know if you score a kill by ammo explosion.

Can we get a patch that adds some way for us to see or know when an ammo explosion occurs? Maybe a visible explosion of some kind? I know that the end of game screen says if you die to an ammo explosion, but that's a pretty lame way to find out.

Of course they could. In fact, they did. In fact, they removed it.

I honestly had no idea so many people were dying to ammo explosions. Kind of makes me happy.

You can see when there's an ammo explosion. It's a constant shower of sparks before a component destruction, or kill. Gauss doesn't have that, but you'll know.

Pictures, or it didn't happen.

Go to the Forest Colony testing grounds, shoot the Catapult and Atlas STs. You'll get one after a few tries.

Took me three attempts, then got two ammo explosions in a row.

Certainly noticeable, even at a distance.

I've seen it happen several times. Unfortunately, the archive of the last time I got a good look at it during a livestream expired some time ago. I'll try to keep an eye out for it and highlight it next time I see it.

I really want to hear some nice bassy crackles and thumps as a 'Mech dies from ammo exploding. The graphical effect is certainly there, and it's satisfying to score a kill that way, but sound wise it's... pretty unnoticeable. In fact to be honest the 'death' sounds themselves aren't exactly very inspiring, kinda been hoping the game's sfx would get a pass sometime in the future. :P

Yeah it's not like it used to be for sure.

Ammo would "cook off" and shake your mech like you're getting hit with ac20's. You certainly knew what was happening then.

It may be wishful thinking on my part, but I seem to recall recently having seen, on multiple occasions, mechs suffering prolonged explosions after my shooting them, followed by crippling injury or outright death. My imperfect mind even conjures memories of the now-eliminated "Unknown has killed" in conjuction with such events.

should be more of a spectacle if ammo goes boom.

Since this bug, I killed countless mechs as unknown, never thought it happens that often. But a bit more rabble and fireworks would be nice so everyone can see it.

Not quite stackpoling it, but that would be a good excuse for big explosions :D

I stand slightly corrected. I'm quite surprised that I didn't notice it before, but there is a visible small explosion when the ammo cooks off. I wonder if it's new, or if I just never noticed because of the small size of the explosion, and the fact that it occurs in complete silence.

It's not nearly as big as it should be. They should increase the graphics size by at least a factor of two, and there is no explosive sound effect accompanying the ammo explosion. In fact, is looks a bit odd to see the ammo cooking and hear nothing, but there is in fact a graphic effect.

Here's a video:

The visual effect of ammo explosion has been here since CB. IIRC it even looked more spectacular than what we have right now.

Edit - and we had sound effect for it as well.

The explosions in CB looked a lot more smoke heavy than the spark bombs we have now. That kinda looks a lot better IMO. :P

Yes, we know that ammo explosions have been in the game; however, they are lame visually and acoustically.

In closed beta they used to be better, and then they got worse. I don't know if they changed it a third time to what it is now. What I do know is that three AC/2 shells impacting on a mech looks and sounds more impressive than one ton of AC/20 ammo exploding, and I think that is sad.

For the life of me I don't understand PGI's reluctance to put a big ammo explosion into the game. It could be visually and audibly stunning, and instead it's a hardly noticeable and silent. It just doesn't make sense. We should be seeing a fireball go up and letting out a cheer when someone cooks off. It should be the kill to beat all kills, the thing you play the game to see more of. Sure it's rare, but that's all the more reason to make it great when it does occur.

I wish they would increase the graphics for an ammo explosion by a factor of 2 (or more), and I wish they'd put some earth shattering kaboom to go with it. There is supposed to be an earth shattering kaboom!

As others said some kind of noise/ improved visual would he nice :/ same goes for engine crits. If my engine gets blown all to hell it would be awesome to see an explosion of some kind. I hate these lame Power Ranger spark fests

Hey rash, if you got into a light once in a while, you'd see it happening :P. Chain reaction ammo explosions are magical. Taking a cat A1 leg with mg's, to see the sparks move from the leg to the torso and then getting the kill is a great feeling as a light pilot.

Agreed that the vfx and sfx should get a buff. I'm thinking it needs to sound like and look like an arty is going off in your pants, BECAUSE IT IS.

Or to show the oldschool SFX a bit better, the classic (which is captured from that video a few posts up):

More things like that and less stuff like *barf* film grain would go a long way towards improving visuals and adding back some "wow".
