In about 20-30 games I played yesterday, only 2 matches had extended voice communication.

In one match, two guys endlessly talked about their private stuff (until I muted both), completely unrelated to the match.

In the other match, one guy called a strategy, people agreed and followed. Was ok, but the strategy failed despite having comms. No problem, +1 for good attempt.

I guess it will take some time until more people use it.

Seems to work fine; some folks use it, some don't.

Why do people, yourself included, think that everyone being on viop is going to make less stomps? If both sides are givin the same tools nothing changes. dur

It will however make for less fustration, as people, like yourself, won't go off on a rant because they only see what they see and blame everything on everyone else as they have no info to go on (kinda like playing 5 matches and judging an entire community that probably hasn't played yet).

lolwut?

Regardless of whos actually talking, it does mean more people can hear you if you have commands or a good idea / target info.

1) plenty of people have used them in my games
2) It helps a lot in team drops too, coordinating the different groups. Those were super fun since everyone is playing smart and communicating

Literally just finished a match where:
A: I confirmed that VOIP was working in the beginning of the match. (still in the countdown screen)
B: I called out the enemy push through the cave, well before it actually exited.. and was still the only one there to receive. (My nova fought valiantly.. and did bring down a King crab face to face.. but the game was lost as my wayward and clueless team was eaten from behind...

derp der derrrrrrr!

I think there are many people who have not had the chance to run out and buy a headset yet. I know my brother has not yet.
perhaps they just did not hear you or they did not understand the danger. also with or without VOIP some teams will still be better than others.

Played 3 games last night before a group of us jumped on MegaMek. Those 3 games were probably the most fun I've had in PUGs in quite some time. People called targets. Players responded to situations. And lordie, when I called out "Solid lock, Gamma", LRMs rained in torrents.

If no one's using comms, that means the line's open for you to take command. Try it sometime.

I was there piloting that idiot panther with 2 ppc (so to be eaten alive by lights).... and I asked to "call targets" (I don't know if you remember).
The fact is that when fight started I could hear nothing but "ahkhkaskhskjd" or "reioioeugrrg" .... at the beginning the sound quality was amazing, but after the first minute of battle, I could not understand a word! :D

Great nova pilot anyway, I could appreciate that.

There are a few comments about those in NA using comms more than in Europe and I expect it to be true, but there is one big advantage you have over us:

Canada/USA = English
Europe = English, Spanish, Portugese, German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Flemish, Icelandic, French, Dutch, Russian, Swiss etc etc... (sorry to all those I missed)

Unfortunately, we aren't quite as compatible and we know it! ;)

I disabled it as soon as it released. If I want VOIP, I will go to my clan TS server.

Thank you. :)
That was a rough match.. pretty much no coordination.

Starting to wonder if the VOIP is just poor quality (which is par for PGI) or if the few people I've heard thus far have had $7 webcam mics. All 4 of them. lol

So we got VOIP yesterday.

Thank you for wasting PGI's time.

I think that's only fair consider how much time of mine they have wasted in the past.

5 games last night, 4 non-CW solo PUG drops, voice used in all of them, sometimes very vocal with people calling targets, warning of flankers, giving strats. Not a single ****** in the lot, no one I wanted to mute or slap through the internet(Santa, I keep asking, why don't you give me that ability!). The CW drop, PUG, AWESOME! 12 man IS PUG defending on Borealis, 12 man organized Clan team attacking, they got a gate open and that was as far as they got. We had a European giving orders in both voip and text chat ingame, spanish language I think, with some broken english, but we got the basics of what he was saying and we made it happen. Targets were called out and quickly eliminated due to focused LRMs and direct fire. Final score was 48 dead Clan to 13 dead IS.

I'd say the VOIP is going to be very useful, as long as it gets used. If no one else is talking, speak up, many people have no clue it's there or how to activate it. Just tell them, 'hold down cap lock while talking' and you'll hear people soon enough,

I am impressed that the OP was able to wait a whole 20 hours before declaring his determination of failure.

No matter how great VOIP is it isn't going to force people to listen.

May be a timezone thing, but Europeans seem very skeptical of this modern witchcraft. Talking to strangers through the internet is one of the things Martin Luther forbad in 1517.

EU has troubles because they have more different langages, while most American players may come form the US and so share english as a common language.
