A player on my team yesterday or day before, announced he was trying a gauss build in his recently won Adder....I chided him for actually costing us a "real" player.
I may have gone over the top..flashbacks to the LRM100 stalker builds that show up and do no damage..
I was rather rude, and I apologize, I'd have sent a PM if I could remember his name.

gauss? 2 tons ammo? 30 ton mech? What kind of a rube even considers that?

..I. had. no. idea.

I 'won' the adder, or the ADHDER

I nearly sold it before running it- I've seen the threads, tried a few smurf builds and figured might as well try it so, ran it, and came this >< close to selling it after first two battles went straight to the toilet

so, what the hell, I ran gauss w/2.5 tons ammo, 3small

uhm...I may have to grind out two more. I thought this mech was a piece of crap? Most of what I've seen is hate about it.

I've run about 5 battles, got pwned in two of the battles, just decimated in minutes, one battle i'd say was average and two battles?
two battles I got kills, split lances up chasing me, and made the enemy focus fire on my location allowing my team to advance.

I just had a blast! sniping across the map, the smalls are nearly heat neutral as the gauss is- hot maps are a JOY, modules for the smalls cooldown/range it just spits tiny lasers out

My obligatory pre work match: down to 3 on each side, then 2, then they killed our atlas, but he did a fair job of stripping armor off their last man, so it was me and the guy with the green line

he messed up, and tried to get away from me- I guess to cool down?
the cat and mouse thing went on for a couple of minutes and I got lucky with 3 of the 4 gauss rounds hitting, and finally with the smalls, with one round of Gauss left over..ONE....sheesh

Chiding a player for playing a ride you wouldn't is common fair... Finding it to be viable and fun... Priceless. Saying so Publicly. Impressive.

I ran my Gauss Adder with 3 tons and 2 x CERSL. If they unlock the flamer I am resurrecting it with 3 tons ammo and 3 x CERSL all in the torso/head.

In the contest thread a lot of people were saying it is not a legit build but I always found it a sneaky little *******. Same for swapping the Gauss for a Lb-20x and Uac20......you could almost see the surprise on some people's faces when you start pouring it on.

^^^ This is why I refuse to acknowledge the forum intelligentsia when it comes to qualifying if a mech or mech build is viable. ^_^

Good on you for walking a mile in the shoes...

Yes, give in to the dark side.

Anyways, a slight variation you may wish to try: Gauss + 2 ER ML. Gives a bit more range and ammo. The downside is the weak legs, but if that makes you uncomfortable you can give up half a ton of ammo for more armor.

The way you are using it is pretty much what it was designed for, long range fire support. The main reason it is so maligned is because when most people play a light, they want a mech that caters to the light meta, which is one that goes really fast, and can boat lots of lasers. The Adder can't do either of those things. I have to admit I haven't really given it much of a chance personally, even though I've had it for a while.

My Adder of Choice:

ADR-COUGAR

It is about as irritating to the enemy as it can get, and be usefull to just about every stage of the battle. The trick to it, is act as a 35t weapons pod for something bigger.

I often say, that the Adder ( and most clan lights to a lesser degree) should be played like under-armoured mediums....

Not everyone can Pilot the machine the same, some can just make it work while others will just make it look bad. never blame the equipment!

Correct, this is what I tell our new players all the time when they start asking what light 'mech should they start with when putting a drop deck together. I always tell them that yes, you have read correct the general consensus is that it is the "badder" but that is because it does not fit in with the way everyone wants to play IS lights with max engines in this game.

The Adder is great for playing cautiously back from the front lines and providing fire support. Two energy based builds that work great in that role: 2 x CLPL (max armor, full heat sinks) and 2 x CERLL 2 x CERML.

I think that PB was one of the last "three on three"
I had NO idea I was the last one standing until I saw our atlas fall over backwards and I'm starting at that Dragon that just flattened our assault, I looked up and thought "gg, close"
To this hour, I have NO idea why he took off, we swapped a couple of hits, I went from mostly yellow to all yellow and red and missing an arm-

I take a gauss kit fox out occasssionaly for fun. Sometimes you have to push normal aside and see what happens. I don't worry much if someone thinks I'm ruining their 10 minutes of game by running an unconventional build.

It's a 35-ton mech. Please get that right.

Yes, I can actually blame the equipment... if it happens to be the Spider-5V.

There is a certain level or point where pilot skill will not trump a terrible design.
