This god damn Nascar meta that has been ongoing forever. In an appeal to common-sense, just think about how pointless it is blindly rushing anticlockwise to the enemy spawn regardless of where you actually spawn. More often than not teams just end up trading spawn locations.
Consider the team that forms a firing line at some point and just blows away the other team as they Nascar around like morons. Just think about that for a minute, that is all.

I know this is like trying to tell people not to be racist, or exercise more, or better people online, or not cheat on their partners. But at least I tried.
Bad map design?
Bad players?
Bad both?

I surmise it is single-handedly responsible for tainting more rounds into FUBAR situations in less than 90 seconds, than any other change to the game.
I'd put it a notch above removal of R&R, which was one of the only actual risk vs reward mechanics.

The people playing aren't blameless of course, but the crappy maps are what enforce regular instances of the Indy 500 on maps like River City and it gets really old playing some of the current maps as a result.

Hard not to NASCAR when your weapon load out is asymmetrical, favoring the right side.
I personally blame it on spawn locations.

And not in a bandwagon ZOMG NERF CLANS way.
StormCrows and MadCats have great speed, amazing firepower, and reward aggressive play. It's always some combination of those mechs pushing the envelope, hunting weak back armour, and leaving everyone else behind! Slow down, MadCat! Leave some for the rest of us!

Today, NASCAR is famous for making exceptional left turns all day any day on a Saturday or Sunday of someone's convenience. Gotta go fast!
It was decided somewhere around 3050 when the Clans "decided to invade the IS", that the IS decided to strike back...stealing all the tech from some secret base on River City Night and decided to race around the city... hoping to avoid the Clanners that were trying to chase them with their superior tech.
The Ice Ferrets were just the beginning of the true invasion...

Yes, but when your team doesn't move it will result in "defend" (and "assault" when the opposite happens). When both team don't move it will result in snipefest when the map is small enough like what always happens on River City Assault.
What NASCAR "tactic" can reward you is shown on what happens when your team spawns at the lower delta on River City Skirmish. If the enemy lance starting at B4 (dropship) is not composed of Lights, big chance that they will lose some, if not all, of their team members.

Repair and rearm.
To the OP ... it isn't so much Nascar as Deathball ... and folks do it because it generally works in the less organized solo queue. If the deathball can roll over an opposing lance before the other team gets organized then your odds of winning go up substantially.

Do you really think this play style would have stuck around for so long if it was a failing strategy? The simple fact is you win more than you lose because more often than not your assaults can take care of themselves.

More commonly what happens is the team that stops in one spot eventually gets flanked and sandwiched by the opposing team's faster mechs. It's why you want your faster mechs pushing forward.
This isn't to say there aren't times for an about-face, but you don't usually want to do it in the early game. You need to give the enemy time to get a little complacent and strung out.
Look, at the end of the day no one is forcing you to play the solo queue with random pugs. Go join a unit and you can form your firing lines all day with your premade.

MWO Nascar started back when the Highlander was still top tier...
