Been playing about 2 months now and have noticed that some mechs have the ability to teleport short distances, usually when running, making it impossible to draw a bead on them. I have looked everywhere but cannot find the module that allows this. Is it an ability of only some mechs, like ECM, or can you buy it for any Mech?

That is lag of players with high network latency. You may try to connect via dial-up B)

Sniper is correct and I'd like to expand on this a bit.Since you stated that you thought is was an ability of the Mech, I'm assuming you may not be familiar with network latency. The simple and quick explanation is that the player who appears to be teleporting has a connection to the game server that takes a long time to communicate. Several things can effect this, but the most common are the speed of the connection (hence sniper suggesting you use dial-up which is very slow) or they are very far from the server. The game servers are in Canada, so a player in Japan would have high latency. Something to know about this situation is that are experiencing similar issues with the game that you see, but it's worse and backwards. You see one mech that teleports because it takes a long time for the server to get information from the player. So the server asks the player's game client, "Hey where are you?" but it takes so long to get an a reply that the mech appears to "jump" to the location it's reporting. What a player with high latency sees is differs in that they are receiving information that is old. Nothing really jumps around, but they are seeing where everything was not where it is. They will have just as much trouble targeting.

The other thing that can happen is a weak connection which causes some of the data to be missing. It can look the same, but usually a server will drop the connection in this case.

just something to add to Spike Brave's explanation,
I used to see this quite frequently when I was playing over WiFi (it made it extremely challenging playing light Mechs on the approximately 1 night in 3 when the problem was evident), changing from a wireless to a wired connection stopped me seeing this with any regularity.

Visual examples of ze teleporting phenomena.

What happens and why it happens.

...Thus, the teleport. It is your game being corrected to where the teleported mech really is on the server, as opposed to where your game thought he was.

Oldest example(s) were with knockdowns. Fall down. Teleport. Stand up.

It's something that you can see in game, a lot, especially with a wireless connection. See post and vids.

Just get a wifi connection and put your computer next to a microwave. When you want to teleport just hit 5secs on high.

Wifi does have a ton of issues in gaming. The biggest problem is for every time the player is a pain to someone else there are probably 10-20 more times it hits them harder.

As mentioned earlier there are also many other network issues and the many times less common exploits that also can occur.

Guass usually solves the problem.

It's a quirk of Firestarters. They also have Phase Shift armor which reduces all damage by 90%.

OMG. I want knockdowns back. I had forgotten how big a part of the game they were. Yea, the teleporting sucked, but the gameplay was soooooo much better.

Would like to add something to the previous posts.
My opinion sometimes it is not from the players end. I get this with some of my faster mechs and I average a 50-60 m/s ping, it appears to go right along with hit reg issues that I have.
I game on a rig built for graphics power with 60mb/s cable Internet using a 3' ethernet cable. I do a lot of CAD and 3D printing, you think MWO stresses your computer try Solidworks.
This all can't be laid off on end users as it appears , for some of us, to be caused by the net in general or their servers.

The other day I was on one of the bridges in River City fighting some guys down below in the water, I magically teleported right down to them, I popped the Crow in front of me with multiple shots of ml before they got me and my dmg score was 1 point.

My ping jumped to 333 tonight.

It's because PGI are too cheap to buy European or Asiatic servers, despite those of us who have spent more than a thousand dollars on the game but don't live in the US.

I will gladly swap my ''teleporting module" for a decent ping and the opportunity to have all my damage actually hit where I am aiming/leading it to.

WOW!!! Thanks... you just cleared up a MAJOR issues we've been having with net lockups and gaming lag. The WiFi was sitting on top of the Microwave! Just had the man of the house wire up a power point inside a cupboard and relocate the Microwave there.

Move to Australia.
Not all fun and giggles though it works both ways.
Gets you teleported into teammates for leg destruction, stuck on walls when JJ then slammed into ground at max velocity, line up a shot then suddenly pointing the other direction at a rock.

Besides certain laws (won't mention for fear of a shitstorm), the ONLY thing keeping me from moving to 'Straya or Kiwiland after school is lag in online games.

God, what does that say about me? Good things, surely.

on a serious note it's all about the network connection. Having players with high pings especially if they are driving light mechs will do that. Already bad hit reg on some mechs doesn't help the issue if you got really high ping players that jump around and you keep shooting where they are not actually there.

This game is pretty bad about it

Do you have a bad PC with really bad FPS? I had that very issue with light mechs on my PC, getting 20 FPS a pop.

But, playing on my dad's PC which gets 30-40+ FPS, the issue went away and I have dropped more then a handfull of light mechs in the last week.
