I listen to music on occasion, but when I am looking to play CW either ts or voip or both is used. I seem to see an increase in crashes when both ts and voip are used.

Have not experienced heavy breathers or screamers.
No change in ping or fps either.

Some games 1 person talks, others everyone does.
Not sure what the OP expects. MWO player base is introverted?

Slowly it seems to be getting used more, I don't think it is a waste, but as others have said, since it wasn't there at the beginning, it is taking some time for people to use. Usually I sit silent, but I am in a room with my sleeping wife, so I will never be loud and boisterous, but I will speak up to let the team know what the opposition is made up of, numbers, and where, especially if they are under ECM. That is usually enough for PUGs to work more together. Thankfully I have yet to have to mute anyone, there have been a couple I would have but it was before the match and the name wouldn't light up, now that the name lights up before the match, no issues what so ever.

...Except that by default VOIP is push-to-talk so you won't hear any heavy breathers unless they're talking instead of just breathing or they've made a concious effort to switch to voice activated in which case I'd imagine that to be a *very* small percentage of the userbase.

Don't get me wrong though the performance and latency hit is ridiculous.

This failure is 75% on the players, 25% on the implementation that causes problems and crashes for some and slows fps for others.

But with how many icons I see with people listening I assume the technical issues are not the big reason. They're not using the tools given that they begged for.

It takes effort to coordinate pugs. Sometimes, you just want to play and relax.

Good morning, I Never Hear Anyone Speak Thread #11,473!

Not everyone speaks in voip, but a majority of players, especially solo puggers, seem to at least listen. The problem comes in small group drops wherein 2 to 6 premade groups drop, each usually in their own TS server, and decide to mute in-game voip. It makes communication between groups rather frustrating.

I regularly drop with 4 to 8 clanmates, in our own TS, but I and one or two others always maintain comms with the puggers, with generally pretty good success, and others groups, with much less success, but only when they all have voip disabled.

Tl;dr: try talking, you'll be surprised at the results.

I like to feed intel data on VoIP. This was me last night on FC Snow.

"Our King Crab is going in the cave."

"Backing up our King Crab in the cave." (But I was late to do it and by the time the KGC was on the other side I was just getting into the cave)

"Alpha Direwolf entering cave"

"Alpha Direwolf in cave"

"Alpha Direwolf engaged."

"Direwolf has heavy support"

The KGC was brawling the DWF and some heavy, I JM6 I think. He lost, I withdrew, our lights rushed in to support the KGC.

"Clear the cave! Clear the cave! Enemy push through cave!" I don't think they saw us.

I retreated to the cave entrance and stood to its right by the avalanche.

"Alpha Direwolf moving through cave"

"Multiple seismic in cave"

"Alpha Direwolf at cave exit, get ready."

"Alpha Direwolf exiting cave, have at it!"

While that was being said, the team turned came back to boxville and set up. Mostly our lights and mediums plus me in a wubhopper. They had been milling about sorta in the water and sorta not. That DWF charged out and was destroyed in less than 30 seconds (I took his arm and torso off, an enforcer got the kill). A stalker came out and got the same. Some heavy came out, probably that JM6 but he had a flood of lights and mediums coming along so it was time to move. It turned into a glorious brawl. I got swamped by lights and another 'hopper up on the avalanche spot and died. We won 12-7. Good game.

It's funny, I find myself still typing to the team instead of using VOIP... just habit, I think.

But if a couple of guys are using VOIP I will generally join in.

Overall, I think it was a good investment of code, and I hope usage will pick up over time.

Voip needed to be part of the game before Open Beta, not years afterward. If it's part of the game from the start then the playerbase can be trained to use it right from the get go - they waited far to long and now most of the player base is conditioned to either ignore communication entirely or don't even know it exists.

I've played many games with voip and had plenty of solo queue players use it, I've had pugs that beat premades. If Voip is a failure then its because PGI dragged their heels introducing it, not because solo players are incapable of using it..

Sometimes features had to be there from day 1.

Unfortunatly alot of those features are half measures. Like a VOIP enviroment where you can test your VOIP. That's a true WTF moment for me. Not to mention the bad qualty.

People are starting to use it more compared to when it first came out. give it time.

besides...all the doom and gloom before voip was "omg! the kiddies are gonna annoy me!!!" but so far I haven't had to mute anyone, and the only real jerk I've dealt with was some dude, who said nothing the entire match, then after he died he started lecturing everyone how they need to invest in a mic and communicate if the want to get good like him, and then we wouldn't get stomped like we did(we lost like 8-12).

Have to agree. Very little use. And about 1/3 of the people I do hear trying to use it are so garbled due to the poor sound quality that they're unintelligible.

For years all the puggers screamed about how they need VOIP to be successful in MWO. That teams were OP and that they refuse to try to use Team Speak for coordination. PGI finally delivers......and no one uses it! I hear someone speak every 10 games or so. This was essentially a waste of resources implementing it. Just like 3pv. Opinions?

Quality is so poor that is not worth it.

I listen in all of the time and put my 2 pesos in when needed. I've only had to mute a couple neck beards so far.

Most players I encounter are still typing.

I usually expect the solo PUG queue to have players averse to teaming, teamwork and communication.

My gripe is when I'm in a 3 or 4 man, and we link up with an 8 or 9 man and not a single one of them can manage to use voip to communicate what it is they are going to do.

Not looking for a phone pal to chat with, just a quadrant or target calls, or anything but silence while we lose.

Well in soloqueue there is more use of it, although my mates do use it when we are in a group too. But better having it and not using it rather than not beeing able to use it at all. People just should try to use english because my russian aint that good...(for xample)

I'm au euro player, and whenever I drop in late night euro drops (start of NA prime time), I hear a LOT more chatter going on on voip. It goes from 1 guy saying three words at start of the match every 5 games to 2-3 guys actually communicating and helping the team in about half of all the games I play, and if not there will be almost always at least one person trying to converse. At NA times, this happens quite often, while I barely (try never) see it during EU times. And I'm not even surprised.

So the problem is right there where we knew it was: euros can't speak English. It's not our primary language and we're just not used to. It takes enough effort to speak to your unit on TS, but forcing your broken English on total pug strangers trough bad quality ingame voip (with some of them not even understanding english, we have people from many different countries like Russia for example that barely understand a few words not alone speak), and our not ideal pings to start with (I believe having 20-50 ping will not affect your gaming experience at all if using voip, try playing with 200+ ping!). All of that gives you reason enough not to even bother.

It's also a reason why I've always been primarily in NA units (insert any mp game here), even tough it's completely off my time those were always the best and serious guilds I played with. The communication is just better. It reflects perfectly in ingame voip status too.
