It represents and idea. Ideals. Standards.
Island for me. There was no question.

Do we need to have the exact group sizes to get the rewards, or do bigger groups also qualify. Like, do I have to make a 10 man group to get the respective reward, or can I do 12 man twice to get the one for 12 and 10?

At least some people will get their Island.

I have qualified in five 12-man games, and the very first post of this thread says that it should be enough for 2+ group, 3+ group, 4+ group, etc. Just read it:
Group Size
2 + (min match score)
However, the Challenges page in my Profile is showing that I have qualified just for the one 12-man group tier.
On one hand I am disappointed. On the other hand, what have I expected from PGI?
Am I supposed to create my own group and then kick people out to have exactly 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 players?

Ok I tried it myself. Had 2 12 man groups, the first counted for the 12 man reward, the second counted for nothing. So you actually have to form groups of all the sizes. Which is pretty terrible, because that is close to impossible to do with the LFG tool since people join your group randomly all the time. They even still join when your group is already searching for a game and stop teh search.
It is like PGI has designed this challenge to expose the flaws of their LFG tool.

Which prize will you choose?
The "on an island" remark was used as a condescending remark by Russ on Twitter long ago as a response to players who where vehemently opposed to certain aspects of how PGI/IGP was handling MWO. All of that drama led to forum bans, lots of bad blood and eventually to the forum "amnesty".
This being said, however, I am not without a sense of humor and I do love to collect rare cockpit items (second chance for operation 24 did upset me), so I will choose the cockpit item.

It really works this stupid way.
I had to kick a half dozen people of the group to get "the exact" group size. I felt horribly, but obviously PGI wants it this way.

However, I did try to find a game of 3 afterwards and it was CHAOS! People kept joining and leaving the group simply because its size was not to their liking so it just kept fluctuating and the game couldn't get started.
I can only conclude that I got lucky, but seriously -- this challenge is a bad idea. It should have been get 30 points in any group size for X number of games. That would have been easier and fairer for everyone all round.
I thought this challenge is about building team spirit. It did, to an extent. I made some new friends, but I do feel for the others who helped us out with this challenge and than were forced to drop out. What about them? Was this challenge fair to them?
This was poorly thought out, and I'm saying this despite being just 1 point away from completing it.
Edit: I suppose there's something to be said about being able to almost complete the challenge within 2 hours of it starting, but like I said...I think I just got very lucky. This challenge is a cinch for those in large guilds or a long friend's list. Others PUGs who are less fortunate seem to be having one helluva difficult time.
