I was wondering if they were going to cancel this soon. I would rather have Mechwarrior 5. If this game was pay to play, without free to play features with a campaign, this game would be good to me. So does anyone know if they are going to still make mechwarrior games?

Not till at least 2018.

So until then try to find someone to pick up the MWO tactics license. :)

Well since PGI has the linece till 2020, it could be a while to know for sure...

I see two options coming out of this... either MWO is used as a cash cow to provide the resources PGI would need to make something like that, or they could use MWO as the frame work for the multi-player side of a new Mechwarrior singel player game.

Either takes a lot of money $6 - $100 million dollars, to make depending on low budget single player or large MMO... so you either need a publisher (bad) or a cash cow....

You could always dig into the archives :).

When digging around this weekend I found my MechWarrior 2 CD for the PC :D. Its the original DOS version so I'm not sure how much of a headache it will be to run through DOS BOX, but I'm guessing a massive headache (if it even runs).

I have it on PlayStation also, but it is MechWarrior 2 (light). Small maps and no mechbay :/.

Any way, there are ISOs online too. Just grab a classic MW game and have fun.

I have several sets of MW2 Mercenaries (Titanium and others). Trying to set up a computer that can play it. Windows 98 is the only stable platform that can do it.

@MeiSooHaityu

ISO's?

--------------------------------
I have Mechwarrior 4's and Mechwarrior 3, but unfortunately, neither run on Windows 8.1 (though MW3 gets farther somehow).

MW4 runs fine for windows 7 I believe. MW3 runs with some occasional issues, better on Vista or XP. Eh, stinks for me though I haven't got a choice for my Mechwarrior fix...

Mechwarrior 5 was a pitch that did not get any backers.

Or put in another way, it's not going to happen.

Where does this 2018 date come from?

From PGI directly. It's in the top half of this post.

They already have lots of the art assets and game logic. Some more programming, map design and a bit of scripting and voice acting could make a nice single player campaign.

Another retail mechwarrior game isn't ever going to happen again. Just play the old games.

They are the games in a form that is meant to be burned to a disc and installed and played like the retail copy.

It stinks that there isn't much support in Windows to run older games. It would be hard to do anyway I suppose.

Well, there is always VM Ware I suppose. Create a virtual machine running an older version of Windows in side your new Windows. Its a lot of work to run an old game though lol.

Keep an eye on the PVE content. If anything is going to produce MechWarrior 5 in the next five years it's going to be PGI using the MWO engine.

They should open a map editor and allow community designed PVE missions like Star Trek Online and Neverwinter do.

It was pretty easy to get MW2 to work on my computer. Is MW2:Mercs a lot harder? I was planning to install that too. :(

Transverse wasn't a battletech game. It also failed because they were trying to compete with Star Citizen and Elite Dengerous. There were also a handful of disheartened players actively working to sabotage the game. It also didn't use any money from MWO.

I (and I imagine many others) are pretty convinced by the way things have improved here that IGP really was behind a lot of the issues faced with MWO. I think sales of mech packages would show that people are still willing to back and support PGI.

Don't be so sure. MWO has reignited many people's love of battletech/mechwarrior. MW5 didn't get backing because they were trying to revive an IP that had been cold for 10 years. Now they have something going. With the PvE assets in the works, they may have an easier time securing funding.

OK, thanks. I'm hoping mine will run through DOS BOX. My version doesn't use 3D acceleration (all software render) so I'm hoping it makes it easier (no Open GL or Direct X to worry about).

Funny I can run Mechwarrior2-MechWarrior4 games and all expansions on windows 8.1 with dosbox and the right patches for all the other MechWarrior games ?

Plus I still play MechWarriro4 Mercenaries on GameRanger with the last Mektek patch
