Changing the color of a laser is done by changing its wavelength. My understanding is that the lens is to focus or collimate. Other internals determine the wavelength. Anyway... they could also be used to add variety. Certain armors could reflect/refract certain wavelength more effectively than others. More complex and maybe not true to canon, but an option nonetheless.

Gravity does have a purpose. It has been mentioned that 'Mechs can take fall damage from toppling over (if unbalanced due to external forces) and jumping from too high. I think I saw a dev post about ballistic trajectories being affected by gravity, but I cannot find it and don't remember who stated it. Considering the engine they will be using, basic physics like gravity could easily be taken into account.

Edit:
Founder's Pack - August 7th.
Open Beta - Summer 2012 (Last day of summer is Sept. 21)
Release - TBA (Really... there's no difference in Open Beta and Release on a F2P game)

Well that's freakin awesome :)

The only idea that I don't like is changing lasers colors - these should stay as they are for a sake of being able to know what am I fighting with. I'm fight though with a little variation in shades (LITTLE).

Other then this - brilliant post.

Now, I'm a pretty avid gamer, but not professional. And yet, I've never had a Win/Loss ratio as low as 1:1 in ANY GAME EVER.
Professionally bad, maybe.

Or just having fun and fooling-around. You have no idea how quickly it can push down your K:D from 2:0 to 1:0.9. I had such ase when playing with my friend in BF3 - got 2:0 and after 1 week of doing most idiotic and fun things ever I ended up with horrible K:D ratio.
Cause I play games for FUN not stats.

Actually it was a couple days ago, did not hear of the online version of the game before that. I really thought this was going to be a constructive thread, but I can see you cant escape trolls regardless where you go. One of those mistakes in life I just cannot learn from regardless how many years or times I have tried.

To try to get back on track and to appease all the kiddies, let us say that I am just a poser... I am only 14, I just ran out of clearisil, my mother is on welfare and she will use her check so I can be a founder...

OP: Plenty of your questions have been answered already, but they are a bit scattered, so you may have to dig a bit more. Both games are similar on the outside, but MW:O is a more matured concept handled by professionals that actually care for the franchise. I've also migrated over from WoT and I think PGI has a much better idea how to handle a game with great potential. That said, welcome aboard and enjoy the ride =)

He said he was a professional GAMER, not a researcher. They are mutually exclusive terms, apparently.

Then I am a little confused... Their entire income will be off premium accounts? Trion Worlds(makers of Rift) is trying to release End of Nations, as a free to play strategic RTS, problem is lack of a decisive way to generate income. They don't want it to be pay-2-win, and they don't want to copy WOT. They wanted the income off the game to be largely generated by selling in game vanity items... They now understand that WON'T work. Power gamers don't care if you make their large lasers all pink and dress their mechs up as unicorns, if it can take more, or dish out more dps, that is what they will roll with. In fact the best clan in WOT was MLP(My Little Pwnies)

LIke I said I really hope the devs do something with MWO that will keep it fresh and active but in the end the devs need to get paid to keep them happy, which will keep them churning out updates. Devs are still humans after all.(although some will argue that - LOL)

this is a fair point what are they going to have for sale, yes there will be premium accounts and boosts but have they gave any idea of what other thing are goinbg to be for sale?
tho not that i think getting people to spend cash will be hard

I am currently under an NDA from a developer, so goading me into stroking my epeen or listing my gaming experience is not going to happen.(well, unless you have more money or a better offer, which I doubt)

So, you will break your word and an NDA for more money than you are currently being paid? Really?

Also, as a professional gamer with so much experience, are you claiming that all of your previous work (except WoT and D3) is still under NDA? Really?

Of course all this is meaningless anyways, as they were just questions and suggestions, if you cannot constructively add to a post, why post?

The same has been said to you in this thread several times. If you cannot constructively add to a forum, why post?

I think the OP provoked such a strong reaction, not because of the opinions, but because of the "professional" gamer claim.

I take no offense at someone giving their opinion on an upcoming game, even if I might disagree. I also take no offense at someone seeking to establish their credentials, to have their opinion be given the appropriate weight. But if you can't do that due to NDAs or other constraints ... why even try? This is the internet. :)

I might as well say I am 007 but can't tell you about my last mission because I am sworn to secrecy (unless you pay me more than my government. In that case, the nuclear launch codes are....)

K/D isn't Win Loss.

Winning every other game just doesn't strike me as particularly difficult, even when messing around.

Having a whole team sniping in CoD, riot shields, or going around tasing people the whole time in Ghost Recon tend to be my favorite past times.

Not really. I mean yes, from the first glance it does. But MWO promises us more "horizontal" than "vertical" scaling in terms of asset advancement. It still retains a fair share of "vertical" differences, but generally speaking the difference betweeen the most munchkin lvl2 designs and more-or less useable lvl1 designs isn't as great as between a Maus and a Loltraactor. Essencially, the whole spectrum of possible mechs could probably fit in the typical level spread of a typical WoT random match.

1) Premium mechs do not have EXP boosters AFAIK.
2) There will be NO mechs available through real money only. Maybe permanent bonuses and cosmetic differences of standart mechs, but nothing exclusive.
3) Money boost is much more moderate.
4) Premium account confirmed.

No. I think not. The core of WoT business model is the race for the top. Once you get da bestest stuff, there's nowhere to go and nothing much to do besides fielding the very same setups of the very same 1,5 tanks in CWs. Or pedobearing in murders and hellcats.
BT, by design, does not have space for much vertical progression, so devs hace to think of other ways to commit players to the game. It should be some major difference since, apparently, WoT devs are unable to think of any intensive (as opposed to extensive) ways to keep players playing.

No. You are wrong. And judging by this you will not like the game. Again. Not much space to go stronger in BT. In fact, tonnage does not matter. Simply by design. Some mechs fail despite their tonns. Some mechs shine despite their tonns. Devs specifically said you will get access to all classes from the start. And no, going past lvl 10 would be a bad idea in WoT. First, it would still be the same extensive development. Second, there's nothing to put there. All lines merge in the bland "MBT" line. And the game mechanics get screwed by the new warfare (ATGMs, practically hitscan APFSDS at WoT ranges, completely different penetration mechanics for HEAT vs composite armour, reactive armour, dunnowhatelse).

1) No gold consumables announced.
2) Player actions are not likely to reshape the map in any radical way. A few border planets may change hands, but anything beyond that is unlikely. Part of the reason is, every non-training game influences the map. Therefore the few pro-gamers are drowned in the pool of casuals.

Leave laser graphics alone. There are many balancing and in-universe issues involved to make lasers look what they are. To begin with, lasers should not "look" nor should they be of any "colour" since, IIRC, BT lasers are of non-visible wavelengthes. Traditionally laser are coloured by their type and size. Balance-wise and to distinguish them from pulse lasers, beam lasers are prolonged in time. While pulse lasers work in short pulses. And no, usual medium lasers are not the weapon you want to cycle for heat management. Heavy lasers or ER Large lasers in packs - yes, maybe. But typically - no. No sense in DPS when the target can turn around and prevent you from frying the same armour section. Cycling lasers spreads damage around a lot if the target is any good.

Falling damage has been confirmed in some videos. And if devs won't implement DFA, - brace for lynchmobs.

Thanks for the post, this of course leads to a plethora of other comments and questions, however because of the kiddies hijacking the thread, I will wait until a later date when more info is out or the open beta has started. Thx again!

The largest mistake the WOT devs made as to grow the game “sideways” instead of “stronger”, so they added more vehicles, but never passed the tier cap of 10. Is this the plan for MWO? Whatever the highest tier is on release will be the highest tier(for MWO I guess this would be tonnage) for the life of the game?

I saw in a video that a dev stated that money can buy you better vehicles, but it cannot buy you skill. What is in the end game for players like me that have skill and money?

I believe you have different expectations of what growth should be in a multiplayer game. For instance, if you look at a game like WoW, where being a level 60 means you will absolutely crush a level 5 while taking 0 damage. Even WoT has its own ways of disparaging the low levels against the higher levels by having your shells do no damage, and by having gold shells and 1-shot kills. This can really only serve to ward off new players from becoming potential buyers, as only a portion of them will be willing to stick around and grind/pay their way out of the curse of the lower levels.

But what differentiates a Mechwarrior game is that 1-shot kills are almost non-existent, and that a high level pilot in an Atlas has more or less the same equipment as a low level pilot in an Atlas. There's still some extras to keep it interesting for the high level pilot, such as modules and variants that perhaps the lower guys won't have access to yet, but at least the lower level guy can still damage and potentially kill the higher level guy. I think of it more like Planetside, which was an amazing game. Also the more recent Blacklight Retribution comes to mind as it is easy to get into as a new player.

In summary I think its a good thing to keep players of different levels playing together, because that way you don't have any artificial barriers to playing against other players. More targets, more fun!

**** I am not a professional gamer, but I do spend a lot of time and money on games.

According to this guy, I'm a professional gardener because once I cut a lawn for money. A few people can say that their profession is gaming, but he's not one of them. You could sum up this thread as 'I did beta testing and think that I'm a games expert. Here are some comments which show clearly that not only am I young and/or stupid, but I didn't even bother with the most basic reading about this game and as a result am totally clueless. I should have a beta key so I can give the devs the benefit of my vast but entirely imaginary wisdom.'

1. LOL someone actually searched the name... That was my account, however I "transferred" it awhile ago. After getting the beta invite to WOWP, and the better clans leaving WOT, I saw no reason for me to stay there. Gotta love the kiddie that posted he played WOT since alpha and never heard of me, should have ran the search before running his mouth. Anyway I did hit the top three in the HOF before letting it slide and transferring the account.

Wrong, if the developers knew best then every single game in the history of gaming would have been a smashing success. Gamers know best, they are the ones with the money and pay for the games, or do you think devs get paid with "Obama money"? The point of the thread was to make suggestions and ask questions about the game.

The problem with your initial post was that you asked very few questions, making statements and opinions almost exlusively. If you had asked "Is changing laser animations a viable option? I don't like the way they look.", I doubt there'd be this much grief and BM. This is the internet, so making statements about how you think MWO should be ran is the equivalent of running into a gorilla enclosure beating your chest and throwing poo at everyone. The responses you're going to get are not going to be favorable.
