No longer the case my friend.

Properly armoured, a Locust only need fear the exceptionally rare AC20 to the cockpit.

And the 3V has more armour than any other Locust:
Locust - LCT-3V Total: 303
Head - 15 Structure, + 18 Armour = 33 pts total
Center Torso - 24 Structure , + 4 / 28 ( 32 ) Armour = 28 / 52 ( 56 ) pts total
Side Torsos - 20 Structure , + 3 / 22 ( 25 ) Armour = 23 / 42 ( 45 ) pts total each
Arms - 6 Structure, + 16 Armour = 22 pts total each
Legs - 16 Structure, + 24 Armour = 40 pts total each

Considering you'll normally run less head + arm armour (5/1/5):
3AC20 to any given CT section to bring it down. (2 in the rear, but they shouldn't get to shoot you in the ass anyway)
2 to a leg.
1 for arm / head (very unlikely, tiny hitboxes).
