I have to admit, it's absolutely beautiful, you guys have outdone yourselves. However, is it playable?

As much playable as all the other CW maps. Working like a charm performance-wise.

I'm fully aware of all that, but it doesn't change my point.

CW(designed and catered to large groups despite large groups only being a tiny fraction of the community) gets another pretty map, solo/small groups are going on 5 months now with nothing. even the bone we got thrown a few months ago with "CW 4v4 is progressing nicely" got kicked to the curb during the town hall when russ said don't expect it until late summer. They made CW in something like 3 months, but a single mode for CW is going to take 8 months or more???

pure BS.

well to be fare community warfare didn't get touched for two years.

also stranded games cattier to large groups as much as community warfare its just the people who go to the effort to form big groups are mostly those who are interested in CW.

the reason many people play standard games is because CW isn't really in a balanced or fully fleshed out state or simply because it takes to long to get into a game, so its only natural that they focus on CW.
each map they make gives them a better idea of what works and what doesn't.

Well here's the thing: CW is late. Like years late. So if they don't focus on getting it up and running and out of beta, all of the players who originally signed up for this game - founders and the like - will be furious. Because the original plan was for solo queue to be a stopgap game mode until CW was ready; CW was supposed to be the 'deeper, more rich full game experience'. Except then it was decided that they would keep solo queue in addition to CW, because CW was so far behind schedule.

So if they concentrate on solo queue maps when they have a promise to keep about CW, they'll catch hell from everybody who expected CW to be an actual thing more than a year ago. Likewise, if they focus solely on CW maps, they piss off people like you who play in the solo pug and group queues only. It's a rock and hard place situation.

Don't misunderstand me - I play pug games a ton, and I really, really want some new map content there. I definitely want it more than I want the potentially lackluster Resistance 2 collection, and would prefer that they had gone for solo queue maps plus CW content instead of CW content and new mech packs that are not that different from existing mechs.

But out of all of the things they said they would do when the game was still in an embryonic stage, CW is the furthest behind schedule. So that's what they're concentrating on. I'm not saying that's right or wrong - I wasn't there when the game was just in its infancy. I'm just trying to explain why they are focusing so much on CW.

That said I really want a solo queue map based on Grim Portico. Sooooo, so much.

Edited for spelling.

I really think they should consider making maps massive then cutting them down into 20+ variations, could have bases with different generator positions but also you could have different facings so you could attack from the north east south west even NE SE SW NW so thats 8 CW maps and at the same time the map could be cut into many sections with boarders overlapping so many maps would have the same areas but not many and always in different coordinates it would speed things up and make every one happy.

no....that's not true at all.

It's that it's practically only playable for for those in big groups. they flat out said they designed it to be that way.

so WHY do stars appear red and blueish to the naked eye from millions of light years away...?

1 - You can't see any star that is millions of light years away with the naked eye. Farthest single star visible to naked eye is around 4000 light years.

2 - The colors of different star classes are not visible at short distances (a planet orbiting said star) because while different classes of stars emit different amounts of light in specific bands the total amount of light reaching your eye in all three absorption bands (roughly red green and blue) saturates your retina's absorption capacity and your brain interprets that as white. If you look directly at or very nearly at our own sun it looks white.

3 - At great distances (light years away) the reduction in number of photons hitting your retina at one time allows you to discern amounts of each color and your brain can interpret that combination as the "color" of the star. Our own sun only looks yellow when you look at a part of the sky distant from the sun's actual position and the atmosphere can scatter a significant fraction of the blue light leaving a yellow appearance.

EDIT: Apparently the surface is made of Corundum, according to the patch notes, which is an extremely tough red-brown mineral . . . so regardless of the blue light the planet's surface would most assuredly still have a deep red tinge.

Actually Corundum (Al2O3) is colorless. It's the same material apple uses for it's watch display on the higher priced models and the iphone/ipad camera cover. The red color comes from cromium-ion impurities (as in a ruby).

Another Arid wasteland. Why does PGI think the factions only fought in empty fields? Boring.

Great, but how about a new map for the non-CW playing crowd?

There were some posts about sizing up the small non-CW maps like river/frozen city.
Also the CW maps could get enabled for non-CW matches... takes some time...

This map looks very good and promising. I'm not a fan of Grim Portico but this one looks awesome.

PGI just sucks at astronomy.
...Like at Canyon Network, where you can see the surfaces of those other planets/moons lit up even though the sun is behind them.

Maybe it's a binary system?

They addressed this in the town hall... The CW maps are designed to do a very specific thing. Jist removing thd CW elements wouldn't result in a good map for regular drops, and vice-versa. Though, they will be looking at re using the styles of the maps between modes.

I think PGI is wrong on this. As if maps need to be Terra Therma-like symmetrical to be usable for the solo-queue. Counter-Attack works perfectly fine, so take out the Mobile Command Centre and you have Skirmish maps. For Assault maps you can argue that one side has the advantage because of map layout. But how is this different from the side bias in maps like Alpine Peaks or River City? In addition, it's also supposed to be perfectly possible to Assault the base in CW with gates and a big load of turrets added for the defending team.
Only Conquest could be a bit tougher but even here I don't really see a problem. Put down 1 or 2 resource collectors on each side and then one each in the middle of each pass going to/from the base.

Doing this might also let people get to know CW maps a bit better, get rid of the stage fright if you will.

Now it could be that PGI wants those maps to be exclusive to CW, as a lure for people to play CW. I'm fine with that, but just say so.

Reading the description and looking at the screeny, I dub thee 'Pug Fear'. Its hard enough herding cats on Hellebore with plenty of cover to move under, this is going to be hell.

Ruby valley, man. Or blood moon, because there's gonna be a river of it crossing that open wasteland to get to the base.

Nope, it will be the opposite of it. No cover = no cover, meaning that your precious LRM-Boats will be exposed and be shot down to a pile of junk before the first LRM Salvo will reach the enemy.

EVERY CW match I've played with my unit against teams that use mainly LRMs ended in a single sided slaughter, so maybe its time for the PUGs to "overthink" their "I need a big fat red button, everything else is too hard for me" strategy. ;-)
