What's All This Cheating Stuff, Anyhow?

But now this announcement says that there are, in fact, ways to cheat, and at least one person was using it. And that person was a top tier player, so it stands to reason that the cheat was pretty effective or they wouldn't have bothered.
So can anyone please explain what types of cheats have historically existed (just in this game...don't care about how you got unfairly fragged in Quake III). I mean stuff that actually happened, not theoretical what-ifs. I'm well aware of theoretical technology; I just don't see how any of it is actually giving someone a competitive advantage in this particular game.
Thanks!

Basically, the hack gives them a wireframe view of the entire map, autopilots their Mech in the direction of the enemy Mech with the weakest armor, and then alphas all the weapons direct at the enemy Mech's CT with no heat penalty. After every enemy kill, it redistributes the players' own armor so that any exposed components are again fully armored.
Oh and it also gives them +50kph speed, unlimited ammo and 3X weapon range.
* I'm kidding.

- aimbots: a program that autocorrects your cursor towards the closest valid target
- maphack: a program that shows you the location of enemies through obsticles and at any range
- infobot: a variably detailed description of any enemy tailored to tell you what you need to know about them.

The general consensus before all this seemed to be that cheating was pretty much non-existent, with the occasional wild claim/accusation about cheating posted with no real evidence, but apparently it does exist even if it's not very good nor is it safe to use without getting banned, so since it exists then naturally people went apeshit about it.

I'm glad PGI came forward and PGI is taking action. I have nothing to worry about so it should stop right there for the majority of us.

Aimbots, wallhacks, etc.
PGI will detect their usage because it's obvious, even the people making know this, they don't care, they charge for them, so it's good for business that PGI be able to stop them for a bit.
1 top tier player has been busted so far, expect more to be found as time goes along, its what happens, especially when money gets put in as prizes.

The person that used it was not a top tier player (otherwise why cheat?), was banned... let's move on.
Go play some drops in solo/group/CW instead of fanning the flames.

Well, just to be accurate, quite a number of people playing MWO go apeshit on almost anything.

Those other matters tend to be observable to a much greater extent though, unlike the 1 or 2 incidents showing cheats lately and suddenly that means rampant cheating everywhere to some people.

I see the PGI statement as just the excuse many people have been waiting for for a long time now.
