And have unlimited fuel! They never did fix the JJ bug in MW2.
It was great at the time, which was 20 years ago. Today, it's rather...well...retro isn't exactly the word I'd use, more like ugly.

I think it's important to separate MW2 and MW2:Mercs with and without textures.

Without textures, I think those games are still beautiful. Because clean, geometric shapes are timeless. It's a sort of medium that ages very well, I think.

The screenshots above look good to me.

But when you add textures, old 3D games look incredibly dated and ugly.

It had a QUAD mech, even in multi, the Tarantula.

Yeah the Tarantula was a special 'Easter egg' mech.

I have wanted the Tarantula to show up in game in MWO for the longest time, but considering the Uebie was released I doubt they would do a second new IS light. It is similar to the Urbie in some respects - slow compared to other lights (even clan lights) and undergunned compared to mediums.

Dosbox is your best bet. Mine is /extremely/ customized to properly simulate a CRT monitor. This build has the framework that I use:

http://ykhwong.x-y.net/

It also has 3dfx support.

The next step is critical...

You must copy your Mechwarrior 2 / Mercenaries CD into a .bin and .cue file and put them on a hard drive partition somewhere.

You then have dosbox mount that file by adding this to the dosbox config file:
imgmount d "x:\MYCDFILE.CUE" -t iso

Where x: is the drive you have the file at and MYCDFILE.CUE is the filename for the .cue file plus the extension

Why must you do this?

Because if you don't, the game will fail the copy protection check. Yes, it's dumb. Even if you have the original CD in your cd-rom it will still fail. But if you do this simple step, you'll get around it and spare your CD any abuse or scratches, too.

I'll probably post an updated thread on how to get this to work in Dosbox but that's the plain and simple. If you want your dosbox to properly simulate a CRT monitor, well, that's something different entirely. I might at some point just offer up on filesharing a simple to install version of it.

If enough people here get MW 2 / Mercs to work in dosbox, I'd love to get some IPX games going. That part is pretty simple to do provided you know how to forward ports on your router. It takes minutes.

I agree, the original MW2 DOS without textures was the best, it is incredible what they achieved with few monochrome polygons. It does not look dated, it is in a class of its own.

And yet, people complain about the graphics in MWO. I like them, they look good to me, but I'm running full eye candy, so that makes a difference.

MW2, I ran in the true wireframe, not those gray boxes in the screenshots, because my little 2meg cirrus logic video chip ran it so much faster in true wireframe, and lets face it, those graphics were pretty bland. The cutscenes were amazing, but the actual graphics in the non-specialized video card versions were rather...well...bland if not plain bad, and the specialized video card versions were pretty bad as well. Pretty good for the time however.

It was a great game, I spent hours and hours playing the single player missions, and I can't even count how much time I played it online, and that was BEFORE the NetMech95 release, using the old NetMech DOS Demo, which I actually played in for the Bloodname Trials when I got my Kerensky Bloodname.

However, that game isn't exactly what I remember, I know because I have loaded it up and played it again, and I was very unhappy with the results. Some people enjoy it, more power to them, I wish I did, I rather liked how MW2 used the TT values for things and how fast combat could be even with the pseudo-CoF created by those horrible horrible hitbubbles Activision used in all 3 of the games. Aim for the CT and hit the Left Leg, or maybe the Right Arm, or maybe the Head, who knows! Which, after played games where aim actually means something, drives me clean up the wall :)

It does tend to look better without textures, doesn't it?

Nothing, even with that dosbox version, I cannot play.
Sadly I get this error:

error code 9005,(and then error 9009 too)

As you can understand, I'm not that good with the pc :P

Never got to play Mechwarrior 2, online. Was working like a slave at the time. I got to play it well after it was obsolete and it was great. This is the first Mechwarrior game I have played online.

I also got to play the free Mechwarrior 4 version offline long after it was obsolete also. Mechwarrior 2, to this day captures the Battletech atmosphere the best. While this game, Mechwarrior Online captures the combat the best, so far anyway.

Still waiting on the whole Mechwarrior 2 series to be GOGified. A remastered version like what they did with Resident Evil would be pretty amazing.

What gives you that error? Dosbox? The game? The game shouldn't give a code like that under dos.

You must mount the cd to a drive letter (probably d:)
You must mount a hard drive partition to another letter (name it c: but DO NOT USE YOUR ACTUAL C DRIVE)
The line in the bottom of the config will read something like this for that...
mount c: e:\ -freesize 1000
Where c: is what you want to call the mount point and e:\ is your actual drive you want to use as c:, whatever it might be (you can even do something like e:\dosgames to keep it all in a subfolder on whatever drive letter, or you could use c:\dosgames , etc.)

Then start Dosbox

Type:
d:

Then, if installing MW 2: Mercenaries:
cd dos

Then:
install

Follow the prompts. Choose sound blaster. Install to c:

Then after done when you start dosbox:
c:
cd mercs
(or whatever you named the install directory)
mercs

It helps if you know a little bit about dos. I grew up with it so it's like tying my shoes. Lemme know how it goes. Nobody should be deprived of one of the classics!

Perfect: with your advices I managed to play mw2 and mercs; that dosbox you recommended (http://ykhwong.x-y.net/) is really awesome.

Since few years have passed, I cannot remember how I managed to remap keys. I remember that I used "wasd" + mouse.

Can you help me about this?

The games actually have one of the worst input configurators in gaming history. It is useable but... confusing and time consuming. Your best bet is to open up the "input.map" files in notepad (not wordpad!) and edit them manually.

Take a look at the file--it is pretty self-explanatory.

This page has good info:
http://www.mech2.org...topic.php?t=914

The keyboard diagram is important!

Posted Image

Looking at it you'll know what represents whatever key you're trying to bind in the file--the game syntax is in the red letters and that's what you use in the files.

Just one more question though no matter how glitched up it is can you get this game to run in 3d like Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries gold?

I think he was actually trying to be helpful, as he obviously doesn't have the game or he'd have given you clear directions, like he did for MW2. It'd be the best answer I could give you as well, since I don't have that game either. You might want to search for a forum for that game and see if someone can help you there, since this is a MechWarrior site, odds of getting help for that game aren't real high.
