Hunson.. I do not call it Munch as you seem to want to. i call it, what it is, technology that has been tweaked over 3 centuries because it was not LOST to pointless succession wars. The clans are superior in terms of warriors and technology, because they did not waste 300 years infighting and trashing the house. They actually kept moving forward. Battle Value is a pointless marker for me. You could have a BV of such a large % over me and I could still kick you from Strana Mechty to Terra and BACK if I am at one with my gear. Skill is where the fight is won or lost, not at the shiney baubles one brings. If a mech is piloted by a superior pilot, in a lesser machine, against a crappy pilot in a superior machine, my money is on experience every, single, TIME.
Funny thing is, you just made me think of something I did on Star Wars Galaxies many years ago as a Rebel Alliance Master Pilot. I mastered the B-Wing, was one of the deadliest pilots on my server in that bird. I took on and DESTROYED, solo, an Imperial Star Destroyer in my B-Wing in less than 1 minute, many many many many times. If you have played that game, you know just how hard this is in such a 'low value' ship, over ships with better maneuverability and smaller hitboxes like an A-Wing for example. BV isnt everything. SKILL is.
Clantech is munch because it was created as overpowered and implemented as overpowered. You can justify it however you want using the lore, but the
3050 TRO was introduced in 1990. Clantech was munch in 1990. The lore says that they had nearly three centuries of advancements, but that does not change the fact that FASA introduced the Clans to be ridiculously powerful so as to justify the story that they wanted to tell. Clanners always seem to overlook the fact that FASA introduced the Clans in 1990, and books were already discussing their loss on Tukayyid in 1991. The scenario pack for Tukayyid did not come out until 1994. The Clans were a plot device. FASA set them up with the Kerensky story, introduced them, defeated them, and then told the story.
I stand by my point that it makes little sense to brag about destroying 'Mechs when you plan to pilot a 'Mech that was specifically designed to do just that. The Timber Wolf was designed as a hunter. They put it on the cover of the
3050 TRO. FASA had it be the first Clan 'Mech encountered. It was the 'Mech that was analyzed in
MechWarrior (1991). For its weight, it really does have the best BV of the Clan 'Mechs introduced in 1990. It was clearly intended to be a primary element of the story FASA intended to tell. Bragging about beating a lower BV 'Mech with a Timber Wolf is like bragging about beating a station wagon in a Ferrari.
As for BV, who said that it was the end-all, be-all in every situation? A pitifully low BV 'Mech can get lucky and decapitate a BV boat, but the relative values of 'Mechs show us how they will typically fare against each other. My "Atlas IIC" has the benefit of munch just like your Timber Wolf, so its higher value speaks to it being a more dangerous 'Mech as designed. The Warhawk and Dire Wolf also have higher BV ratings than the Timber Wolf.
Never played Galaxies. Have no clue how the mechanics work, but it is obvious they designed it to allow a single fighter to defeat a Star Destroyer. An Atlas can defeat a Timber Wolf, but it is at a serious disadvantage when simply comparing the 'Mechs as designed. An Atlas pilot could brag about beating a Timber Wolf because the BV values are not even close. A Timber Wolf pilot should not brag about beating an Atlas because the BV values are not even close.
