I personally think Gauss/dual-gauss is too strong, it seems my opinion is in the minority though.

So i have a question for all you guys defending 15/30 points of damage with no real travel time on the projectile... Why do you think the light queue is so low? There's a handful of reasons, but one of the big ones is Dual Gauss insta kills anything but a fresh firestarter. I KNOW it's meant to be a painful weapon, but it has too many pros to its few cons.

I would take away the clunky charge mechanic, nerf the damage to 10, nerf its travel velocity some AND / OR change it so you can't fire more than 1 or 2 gauss/ppc at the same time. Not saying nerf ppc builds, only gauss. Fire 1 or 2 gauss (decided by PGI) and it puts any ppc on a small cooldown.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of poking my head around a corner and taking a gauss out of nowhere. It's more infuriating than the LRM spam because LRM's are easy enough to shut down or spread the damage. I see people complaining about PPFLD all the time, but they don't want to nerf the biggest PPFLD weapon in the game.

Just my two cents.

Cons:
Blows up in your face
Charge up adds to effective cooldown
Really heavy (i.e. 2x gauss weighs more than some lights)
Needs ammo in addition to base weight

Tale as old as time~
Scouting on B3~
Just routine and bored~
Then you just get cored~
Unexpectedly~

Just a little change~
It's all for a good cause~
Put a little charge~
Adjusting's not too hard~
Paul's nerfing our Gauss~

Ever just the same~
When the nerf arrived~
Ever just before~
Ever just as true~
Dual Gauss will thrive!

Tale as old as time~
Meta old as song~
Bittersweet and strange~
Finding there's no change~
Learning you were wrong~

Certain as your pugs~
End up getting lost~
Put a little charge~
Adjusting's not too hard~
Paul's nerfing our Gauss~ (x2)

In MW4 the gauss had a recycle time of 7 seconds and for a good reason. It would be a good idea to do the same in MWO and remove the pre-charge thing or, at least, make it a bit faster.

In MWO I would like to try a 6 seconds cooldown time if a single Gauss is mounted else 8.

More like, time to adjust your play-style. Amirite gais?

Also, RIP gausscat - you will be missed. I hold the OP retroactively responsible for the terrible violence visited upon the K2.

In MW4, Gauss also does 18.00 damage instead of 15, with 24 rounds of ammo per ton.

Personally, I want Gauss Rifles to be more devastating and probably losing charge window, but longer cooldown and can only be shot singly by itself, forcing a brief cooldown (0.5 seec?) on any other Gausses and weapons except weapons like MG/Flamer but I digress.

I'd be all for doubling the cooldown and taking the charge up mechanic and putting it in the trash.

It would still be a good weapon for what it does but it would be pretty crap in a brawl.

How about we remove all weapons and leave only flamers and machine guns. And let the endless battle begin.

This nerfing threads are really tiring... :(

You do have to shave armor on Jaggers, or take less ammo to use Gauss on them. That build is slow. Lights are real trouble for it. DWF is the only really heavy handed double Gauss I can think of, but it has to pull way back to have survivablility.

I used GI, and jagger 2xG, works great if you mind your positioning, but I usually score as well, if not better in my wub builds.

Mine is a Firebrand with medium and small lasers for backup. It's nowhere near slow enough to be at a serious disadvantage against a light and it has plenty of ammo.

I think gauss is fine as it is, but if there was a need to nerf it I'd prefer just adding 1 second to the cooldown.

Going dual gauss on IS mechs is a very heavy investment in tonnage and vulnerability, a minimum of 36 (6t ammo) tons to be worth it. 36 tons invested in a single weapons system, that better be damn powerful to be worth it.

The Dire wolf only needs to invest 29 tons (can get away with 5 tons ammo), and has a full on laser vomit to go with it. That's a little more problematic but I still don't see it as a huge issue, the dire wolf is a fun mech to fight against because it is both "OP" in terms of firepower and "UP" in terms of being possible to outplay completely. Being killed by a dire wolf never feels unfair somehow, despite the extreme firepower.

I like the fact that there are niche builds who can potentially instakill you if you make positioning mistakes, it keeps you on edge and forsters good awareness. The price for those builds are high enough in most cases to be balanced, no real need to nerf anything in that department. What should be looked at is if there are mechs who get that sort of power for too cheap or coupled with too good mobility and durability, that is when nerfs are needed. Strengths in themselves are not a problem as long as there is a corresponding weakness.

No it doesnt. Jenner, Panther, Raven,.. all survive a 2xGR hit when fresh.
Not even a fresh spider is one-shotted by it. CT has 32 armor and even if its running an XL engine it shouldnt regulary get one shotted as there is something like 25 armor plus 12hp. Plus even dual gauss often DOESNT register in one spot on a moving light, especially up close. One has to lead that light which causes the gauss rifles to converge at the background and not the correct distance for hitting that light.

Finally, theres really wonky hitreg on fast moving mechs. Sometimes one doesnt register. Sometimes both. Sometimes it works just fine. Roll the dice.
Most lights getting insta-gibbed by 2xGR (or big laser boats) make fatal mistakes, such as becoming stationary or peeking around the same corner over and over again. Your supposed to blow up from weapons that are heavier than your mech in such situations.

Another big factor in low light-queue numbers is the total absence of information and role warfare. Lights are nothing but small and fast DDs.

I didnt think the GR+2xERPPC K2 could be ruined any further. Turns out that was wrong. The reasons for doing so completely escape me though.

Off all the weapons, dual gauss is of little concern to me when playing lights. Which is quite rare to be honest.
Streak-boats are much more dangerous and even they shouldnt be nerfed.

first, remove gauss cooldoawn module. low rate of fire should be the single one biggest disadvantage.

second, give 50% rate of fire penalty to gauss rifles if yo bring more than one.

you dont like this...GO AND PLAY CALL OF DUTY OR BATTLEFIELD, this not supposed to be a goddamn instagib shooter!

you dont like this...you´re not interest in a balanced game and just want keep your easymode.

and yes, i got a dualgauss crab myself, by far easiest and most boring way to play. no skill needed (mechs move slow), just point, click, watch mech disappear, repeat.

dualgauss needs to go - or at least be adjusted so it´s not the goto config anymore, just like poptarting had to.

"but there are mechs in tabletop with dualgauss"...sad info for you, this is a computer game, apples and oranges...
I don't even use dual Gauss but please....

I never had a problem with the gauss charge up but it's kind of funny when you kill somebody with 2 or 3 direct hits from quite a distance away.

It no longer belongs, it was a gimmick to help nerf pop tarting. It can be removed and the cooldown increased to 6 seconds without causing any consternation, except the bads who will still cry when anything kills them.

Given how you hand wave anyone who might disagree with you I can't see any reason to take your suggestions seriously as you have no intention of having a discussion about the possible pros and cons of your suggestions.

That being said I have a suggestion for the mods. Anyone that posts a thread to "discuss" something on the forums but has no interest in actual debate who instead wants an echo chamber should have their posting rights revoked.

Double GAUSS? My SHD-2H brawler says: yum!

To add more meat to "one shot kill" discussion I can affirm that I can kill a fresh spider with a single shot of 3 IS PPC (30dmg as 2x Gauss)
