I'd say there's somewhere around 70,000 players right now.

You seemed plausible until you said that number.... unless the context was misunderstood...

There might be over 100,000 accounts (Same person with different accounts, troll accounts, banned accounts,ect)... but there as NEVER been over 100,000 players in this game EVER....

I would say maybe 100,000 players have tried the game from August 2012 to today(June 2015) in total....With TONS of First and LAST time players back in 2013-2014,ect... That I can see...

but never 100,000 players at the same time or period...

I meant 100,000 active players - not concurrent, of course, but active as in plays the game at least semi-actively.

Point 1: There were about 68,000 founders in 2012. Not all who played in 2012 were founders. Not even all who played in closed beta were founders. The game likely had over 100,000 players already back in 2012.

Point 2: This forums has 620,483 members. Last one created today.

So for your assertion of "never more than 100,000 players ever" to work, you must also assume that the average player creates no less than six forum accounts.

I don't think that's a reasonable assumption.

Generally, only about 10% of a game's population ever visit the forums. If that holds true for MWO it means that up to 6 million people may have tried the game out over the years.

70k semi active players isn't much of a stretch.

We do know 17,000+ people participated in the Tukayyid event.

We also know that there was at least at one point 2,340 concurrent players in CW alone during that event.

Finally, we know that roughly 10-15% of the population regularly play CW, and that the Tukayyid event likely had a larger percentage of players than that.

From there, you can draw your own conclusions.

Mine is that MWO is a small, fringe game with a player base of roughly 100,000 players. Which, all in all, is not bad for what it is - but rather disheartening seeing as the founders numbered closer to 70,000 three years ago.

If you are thinking "registered" players I'd be willing to accept 100k or even 150k.

My friends list is littered with buddies who are registered and haven't played in over a year and despite my constant urging have no interest in returning.

Going by my wholly unscientific of inactive friends, I'd guess there are 50,000 or less that play this game with any regularity and many of those don't spend money.

PGI really, really Eff'd up back in the day when they offended many of the original founders. Those people were prepared to carry on putting cash into the game but were alienated. Some of us hung in there, but the damage was done.

Now they depend on new players converting to spenders, but at the same time they haven't figured a way to truly attract and retain any new players (spending or not).

Personally i think this is why you see such a heavy emphasis on grinding out new mech packs to sell and little to no effort to improve the experience for new players. I think that they don't have enough "meat on the bone" financially to divert resources in any significant way towards attracting and keeping new players. They've developed themselves into a rut that they can't seem to escape from.
