Shorter 'mechs make smaller targets (generally), that's why.
Size is very relevant in MWO, although it's not strictly height but also width and depth to a degree.
A tall, narrow 'mech can be okay, as long as it's not too long front-to-back.
A tall, wide 'mech... Well, the Awesome isn't.
Short and narrow is where it's at, because people don't aim half as good as they think they do.

They do this to all the mechs where necessary to add torso twisting.

i couldn't care less about gameplay; it's not about gameplay.

Well as always we'll have to see how it stands next to other mechs in-game. It might surprise you. We never really know until we get those usual screenshot teasers a day or two before release. I think the mech looks awesome.

Alex does really good work. Unfortunately the end designs sometimes don't always strictly adhere to the concept drawings.

Imo, its purely width and depth because those are the planes the mechs move in (barring JJ mechs, which this isnt). Height is extremely secondary to those in terms of aiming.

Though, partly, i do wish both the Cauldron Born and the Black Hawk didn't have waists (no torso twists).
Why?
It'd give me some hope for Quadruped mechs. (Scorpion being my favorite mech in Battletech)

So many mechs made by MWO look 10 times better then the origenal. Only the Gargogyle was a dissapointment IMO

Yeah, I have found a liking for many mechs in MWO that I was absolutely horrified by the TRO artwork. Best example: Kintaro. If Alex can save that mech, then he's got my vote as a miracle worker. Now, let's see if he'll tackle the Crockett.

Or balance.
OP, a heavy mech with the height of a medium? A small medium? With high weapon hardpoints, and what looks to be amazing frontal hitboxes?
No thanks. Nostalgia needs to take a back seat sometimes to gameplay practicality.
If anyone thinks it being the "size of a cicada" would dethrone the Timbergod.....
