I've recently restarted playing Mechcommander 2 again i'd forgot how good it was. How many of you ever played the Mechcommander series and what was your personal opinon on it. I for one loved it

I played them all. I like the Mech Commander gold edition most though. Didn't like MC 2 as much cause the AI was dumb and would fallow my scouts across an entire map into a trap; which I thought brought the game quality down.

i know how to make it work on your system. my system is 64 bit and its running just fine. What you have to go is find the folder you installed it into and detele 2 files

First file Badcard.csv
Second file Vidcard.CSV

This will stop the insande FPS choke you get when you start the game and allow it to run as normal

it was really awesome but one thing REALLY annoyed me:

when giving the command for long range firing it's just a command for only using the designated long range weapons but walk where they want. in MC1 the pilots kept the long range distance instead! without that distance keeping the command is pretty much useless.

MechCommander 1 is an amazing game. It pulled no punches, but was fair about it and promoted planning your actions instead of meatgrinder. Still great fun after all those years. Replaying it right now on hard, with the "whatever happens, stands" rule (i.e. no replaying missions for better salvage etc.). It's amazing.

MechCommander 2 was a game with potential, and a nicely told (albeit horribly cliched) story. A shame that the gameplay was ruined by one of the worst AI in a strategy game: once the enemy locks onto a unit it will ignore everything else and slowly chase it until either of them dies, 100% of the time - that's about Dune 2 (or Lemmings') level of sophistication, and manages to suck most of the fun out of it.

It was also broken how easy and good headshots were, and its "hard" difficulty was simply unfair by making the players' weapons do almost no damage rather than make enemies smarter or more numerous (150 tons' worth of mechs would take a good while to kill an urbanmech, and no amount of tactics would spare you the damage when your weapons simply don't work). Beat it once, was fun, but couldn't bear it again because of glaring issues with the gameplay.

No one mentioned that yet?

Most people forgot about it but the source and assets were released in ~2008 (or so).

Yeah your right the game does have some massive AI let downs but its still hell of a load of fun to play though again after such a long time

Every time I think of MC2 I always hear the confirmation beep associated with issuing a command order.

Good times where had with this RTS of sorts.

MS made the source code shared for free use a while ago. Link

It works quite happily for me on 64bit Win 7, I just need to run the game in XP SP 3 compatibility mode.

mine was never that simple, i'd load it up once and it'd run like a dream but if i closed it and reopened it there would be a nasty FPS choke and it was to do with thoes 2 files i mentioned above

I loved the mech commander series, it really did make you think tacitly. you had your ton limit for each mission so had to think a lot about which mechs to take and which load outs / pilots to bring. Scout mechs played a crucial role so you couldn't really be with out one.

I too have been playing MC2 recently and enjoyed it so much i'm going to track down my MC:G disk and get the running as well :D

Played both... In my opinion MechCommander was the most challenging game - how often the mission failed - incredible. With MechCommander Expansion you was able to switch the difficult level - but that was after all less fun.
MechCommander 2... had a weird difficult level. on regular it was to easy on veteran i never got pass those UrbanMech...he killed my three mechs with its few salvos - and i tried a lot.

I love the MC 1. I have bought it in our country the day it came out and it costed me the same money as my Legendary status here did. It was and still is one of the best tactical RTS I've played. The RPG elements in it and the hardcore unforgiving playstile was great. The Gold version allowed you to soften it down a bit but I was able to take my hands on it much much later than the original so the atmosphere of the first play was already gone.

Also which I loved about the original game was the Tech manual which came with it. I still have the book and it's superb.
