Can't say with certainty that I've ever sold anything since I first started back in August, 2012.
Sell prices are what? 10% of purchase price? Makes zero sense to me to sell anything, ever.

Only from time to time when you end with 50+ spare medlasers or small lasers you know you can sell 40 of those and still get enough for the long run.

I also sold about 30 mechs one time, because I figured I only needed my favourite variants anyway. Then I changed my mind and bought them all back. Without premium time.
Embrace the grind.
Anyway, that's all over. My grinding days are done. Now I just waste my C-bills on weapon modules for the lulz. My OCD has driven me to fully equip and master all the variants of all my chosen chassis.

I don't freak out and sell inventory to buy a mech, though there are times I sell my inventory off, bring it down to about 10-50 of each item in stock. I just didn't need 200+ Medium Lasers and 60 AMS......

I sell the junky STD engines and do like cdlord has stated...when you look and see 134 IS SHS you realize they are not necessary and the reason I have a stock pile the size of an atlas here.

See I'm one of those that builds the crap out of a mech until I can say O.K. this model and variant is the best. Scrap all the rest. It's a little OCD of me but I won't pilot a Enforcer 4P, when I do and play so much better in an Enforcer 5D. I just junk the crap I don't use.

I quit selling XL engines, never will do it again.
But weapons, modules, Omnipods, even mechs I will sell if the need arises and I'm sick enough of crappy earnings.
I think I'm lucky though, because I have most of the mechs I could ever need/want before Rewards 2-point-shaft.

I also once sold almost half of my clan mechs (redundant variants) to help fund my Warhawks, then decided I hated not having at least 3 of all my mastered chassis, and grinded to buy them all back (did have premium time, though).

Considering how easy it is to have multiple copies of the same crappy standard engine (that come stock in a lot of mechs) that you will accumulate from the crappy mech tree grindfest, in addition to more medium lasers and jump jets and heatsinks than you'll ever need, it actually makes very little sense to keep everything.

I have my "The 1%" title
I have 2 hero mechs (so they don't count) and 5 clan mechs (3x SCR, 1x TBR, 1x HBR) loaded out with modules.
I get bored easily and since the grinding is rediculous, I sell alot.
Some eg:
Sold all my IS mechs and modules during Tukayyid and switched to clans (never really bothered with them before that), and elited TBR,HRB and SCR (so that means I bought and sold 2 extra TBRs and HBRs to elite them)
I do things like buy and sell the Awesome 9m (5x times now) basically whenever there is an "improvement" to PPCs to see if the mech is still craptacular or not.
There was also the great myst lynx debacle during the last event with the clan C-bill discount. Bought 3 variants with c-bills at the same time with the intent of eliting one, played about 5 games and decided that was a terrible mistake, and sold them all.
I change loadouts alot, which means burning through GXP for new module types, selling the old modules and buying new ones.
Insane? Meh, not as insane as PGI's prices.
I like blowing up robots, if I can blow up robots in a variety of ways, faster, (to keep me engaged in the game) I will sell stuff to make it happen.
