Bad Uses for flamers:
1) Damage .. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Dont use em for this seriously.
2) Getting people to drop everything in favor of shooting at you. Nothing attracts attention like a mech shooting flamers. They suck for pretty much everything but for some reason give you +1000% aggro against other players.
3) Keeping a mech, heat locked. Don't try this for the above reason number 2. Waste of time for your own DPS, and you have to present constant face time or stay in the same area, circling or, stationary (dont do this), making you a primary target.
*Lights who run in circles in a predictable zone will inevitably have their legs plucked off by someone who is not being pestered.
Good Uses for flamers:
1) Sucker Punching
2) Cross Countering
The only time a flamers heat means anything, is when it is being combined with the heat of an enemies weapon. Ying and yang combining force, yada yada something like that.
Thats right, there is only a small window, the moment when an enemy fires their weapons, that flamers may even be the slightest bit useful. Like some new fangled mech martial art, or swords play, your are using your opponents heat against them, counting on the fact that they heat beyond shutdown point to make them accidentally shut themselves down, like a well executed throw.
There is always the danger that the enemy mech may be at 0% heat, thus causing no reaction. At the point you stop flaming and just evade as normal, but if you actually manage to catch a hot mech in action, they will most certainly shut down.
Obviously when your in the clear, and the other guys attention is on someone else, that is the second time a flamer is useful, tho only as a support for that other guy. You wont do damage, but causing heat on that mech will not let him return fire on your friendly, while he can dance around and hit back on blinded and hampered enemy mech.

Shortly after my sub-fifty damage game, I decided I would take the flamer off my Awesome.

I've genuinely had tons of fun with the flamer on my streak-boating Adder after running out of missiles.
I will really miss it after they de-hardwire it...

Useless since the beginning... and even when it was brought up when Firestarters were released like a year ago, it went unaddressed (it was adjusted once before, but, there's a great video of the hilarity/fail).

So are you saying that MWO has infantry, and that those infantry pose an extremely powerful threat against battlemechs? That those infantry can and WILL kill an assault mech unless that assault mech equips Flamers to defend itself? And that if that assault mech tries to use any weapon EXCEPT Flamers on those infantry, that the infantry will just shrug it off harmlessly and proceed to utterly destroy that battlemech?
Oh, wait...
There are mindsets like this in every other MWO thread, and it's the reason why we can't have nice things.

You know that the equivalent of saying a weapon is alright cause its anti-Unicorn, it works really really well at killing unicorns. But unicorns aren't in the game making the weapon completely useless.
Fix it to work with what is actually in the F***ing game!

But, seriously, it's my "destress" build. Plus, it'll make even good players make bad choices.

So... we have a game that doesn't have that, and somehow it must stay useless for the only things that do matter...
"OK"
So why do you want a weapon that for the longest time did either little damage or little heat on your Mech? I mean teh choice is there. You can either use a flamer and make your opponent warm or you can use a real anti vehicle weapon.

Yes, this mindset of not comprehending what a person actually SAYS is why we cannot have nice things.
Since you have never played BattleTech, should go research Elementals.

They remove it then we will have people complaining that we do not have the Flamer and cannot burn down forests.
How about we leave it and not let what one person think meta is to dictate how anyone else should or should not equip a mech.

If we didn't have to depend on all teamates pulliing their weight, people wouldn't care that some want to mess around with flammers. I'm not saying 'go meta or go home', but somethings hurt more than they help, and if it's done for the individuals enjoyment, it's kinda selfish.

I think PGI should scan to see what players use them the most then send them a set of 13" spinner hubcaps as a reward.
They would look good on your sporty hyunda excels and would go along with the Amp worth more than the car.

Lights have a hard time hitting you, dealing not only with their own maneuvers but that off the lack of vision on you from the flamer. Hell even if the flamers are not in range, up to a certain distance they still obstruct your opponent from getting a precise shot on you.
It's the only use i found for flamers, visual interference. Still, that extra ton still can go to more useful things. If you wanna have some fun blinding your enemies, throw off a medium or DHS and just pop in one flamer and have fun blinding enemies to your hearts content.
