So, after viewing the size comarison video posted by Tina earlier, I made a quick and dirty side by side mockup for the adoring masses:

Mech on mech:

Torso on torso:

So, some observations:
  • Despite the height difference, both mech's arms are roughly the same height from the ground.
  • The Jag's arms are almost 20% wider than the Cat's, but the difference doesn't look all that extravagant.
  • The Cat's arms are quite a bit further from the cockpit than the Jag's.
  • The Jag is very, very squat compared to the Cat. Lookin' good!
  • The Jag will have to expose far less of it's silhouette to be able to FIRE ALL THE WEAPONS.
I'll be interested to see how the hitboxes work out, because usually taller and thinner > shorter and fatter. Will the arms atop those vents on the Jag be part of the torsos or the arms? If they are, it will make the ST's sort of an X shape.

Edit:

From the sides:

So, it appears that the jag will be able to hill hump with the best of them, but may have more exploitable hitboxes than the Cat - compromising it's ability to brawl. It looks a little Stalker-esque from the sides too:

BUT OH SO BEAUTIFUL.

Thoughts?

Only Smoking Jags call it an Ebon Jag.

Even the other clans call it by it's cooler name...Cauldron Born.

Nice mockup/Comparo though. It should be a real monster.

Can you do one with the Executioner and Banshee/Atlas?

The mech isn't exactly something i'm looking forward too. This is the first clan mech with an acutally low silhouette, isn't it? If that thing is at the level of a timber, then i'll probably just quit the game, at least for a while. MWO has quite a few unique and cool elements you just don't find in other games, but all it's issues, all that broken balance nonsense and p2w just isn't worth bothering at some point.

Whatever, sorry if I spoiled the mood.

And from the sides...

But, where do the torsos end and the arms begin?

Posted Image

If the Arms are part of the torsos like the top pic, then I pity the fool that tries to ridge hump.

If the torsos resemble the bottom one more, the arms might actually soak up some of the anti-ridge return fire, which would probably actually be useful.

Hmmmm

Not that way i see it. I see having to take two sides from the front to kill it and hitting the arms when its twisted.

Its going to be very hard to kill.

Clanners like long range anyways. Obviously as far as CW goes, dropping 10 tons helps a lot. I see this mech as being quite the meta monster.

I think so too, but the lack of JJ's will hurt it.

I think it will be slightly more specialized than the overall good-at-everything MadCat.

Probably better in CW than it will be in the PUG queues.

I still think the thing will be able to brawl like the best of them too. It may have some wide torsos, but it'll be able to turn to the side and use its arms and other torso as a shield easy. The thing that made the Cauldron Born such a survivor in precious Mechwarrior titles was that no matter what the Cauldron Born was able to spread damage out across its body and still return fire with full power. I dont see anything else other than that happening in MWO

Depends if you have that missile rack as well. It doesn't benefit from having a cone shaped face like a Timberwolf or Stalker. I don't know about you, I'll have no problem hitting that flat spot on the front of both side torsi. It's so short. Any mech taller than it will have no problem hitting the side torso, it's arm doesn't cover much.

I have a feeling the arms and torso will meet at that green stripe at the arm. The one in the middle, under the missile rack

Overall size difference aside, note just how damn huge the Catapult's launcher looks. Even if you double Black Jag's LRM10 launcher in size it will still look much much smaller than Catapult's arms.

Sweet Jesus.

The Catapault looks like a Whale with legs carrying a couple of old CRT TV's on it's shoulders compared to the sleek murder machine that is the Cauldron Born...

The thing is, if the ludicrous arms on the Catapault are taken with a grain of salt, the surface area of the two mechs seems similar across the torsos, but the Cauldron is just so much flatter.

Flat and wide.

El Bandito knocked something up over here.

Looks.. almost good! I may be regretting not going top tier with that pack.
