Okay, so even though I don't really think it should be changed, I just had what I think is a decent idea on how to do that, although it's not perfect either I'm sure. If IS XL engines got a bit of a survivability buff, then this could be accomplished by making the mech take override heat damage on side torso destruction rather than instant death, with of course no way to mitigate the override damage. This still means basically guaranteed death, and in most cases it would happen pretty quickly, but it would allow IS XL mechs to live slightly longer and to go out with guns blazing before being destroyed.
I believe this also makes some sense as far as lore because people go on about how you're not destroying the engine itself but rather its shielding, damaging the shielding just results in a huge heat spike, blah blah blah I'm not really that familiar with it, but seeing as how side torso destruction is basically "3 hits to the engine shielding" then it wouldn't be unbelievable that the heat would go out of control and destroy the mech's internals just like when you hit the override button and go beyond 100% heat.
There are 3 things I see that could be undesirable though, depending on how people feel about it:
1. Do we even want people running around in a ticking time bomb mech like that? The only thing that's kind of comparable is ammo explosions, but ammo explosions are so uncommon that they're not even really worth considering, and even ammo explosions can be mitigated with CASE or just prevented completely by only using energy weapons.
2. It would mean that as soon as a side torso is lost, you can just go completely nuts with any of your remaining weapons and not care about heat generation because there would be no additional consequences. Sure, you can already hit the override button and destroy your internals that way, but the thing is that if side torso destruction results in unmitigated override heat damage anyways then you have nothing to lose by going completely nuts with your lasers or PPCs or whatever.
3. What do you do to the mech if you want to further disable it while it's going nuts with its side torso gone? It's going to blow itself up anyways, so is it even worth it to shoot the mech further at that point, and where would you even shoot if the mech still has armor on other important components? Seems like kind of a dumb situation possibly if you have mechs that are not worth shooting at even if they might still be a threat for a short period of time.
Again, I don't really think it should change honestly, but If IS XL engines were to be buffed then I think that would be an interesting way of doing it.
