PPC's deal full damage up to around 500 meters.

Sometimes UAV's will be 900+ meters away and you'll only get a fraction of your full damage on them.

Interesting. Using CERPPCs I can see the PPC splash and can tell from the timing and splash size that the PPC bolt is actually striking the UAV and not the skybox behind, but even after 5 or 6 hits the UAV will still be operational. With lasers, even at close to max range, it only takes a hit or two to knock the UAV down.
Could it be that the PPC bolt hits some part of the UAV while it's bobbing that doesn't have a damage box, so I see the splash but all I've done is hit the flames or something?
I'm not basing this on just one occasion.

My favorite is Night vision doing what thermal is supposed to do......

nope thats correct thats a hot map the cauldron is a hot place you get 20% heat or so just for staying there argo the smoke there is hot too and will show in the thermal vision so nothing wrong here

base heat of the map was 70°C or something like that? so my guess is that the cauldron is something like 90-100°C so steam should be 100°C+ if its watersteam

The map has dynamic weather. It does clear up at times.

I know, but it isn't worth swapping in and out of thermal.

The same has happened to me using gauss and ER LL's.

I think the UAV moves up and down slightly as it hovers in the air. I could be missing it.

Anyone know how many hitpoints UAV's have? I suspect normal UAV's are easy to get rid of. Advanced UAV's could have a HP and altitude boost that makes them tougher.

I was under the impression they had 10hp. Correct me if i'm wrong folks.

According to this they have 10 HP. http://mwo.gamepedia.com/UAV

The thing that always frustrated me is that the hitbox doesn't extend to the jets keeping it aloft, which is usually the easiest part to see, and is way smaller than it looks. So it's easy to fire at it and miss some damage because of the bobbing motion.

UAVs do bob up and down like floating buoys. A non issue if you are close enough to target one because you are practically underneath it, but a pain as you get further away. They move several meters between the top and bottom of their cycle, which is several seconds long. Never actually tried to calculate the travel distance. I gave up on using PPCs at longer ranges on UAVs long ago, too much trouble trying to lead them with wasting time trying to figure out the bottom and top of there movement.

Hmm... You've missed the point

I'm not debating the validity of the thermal vision, it's night vision that is all wrong. And I'm not going to debate thermal vision with arbitrary numbers either. It looks very much like smoke, I would expect it to be treated as much. I've never seen brown green steam.

Thermal vision can and is used to see through smoke. Fire fighters use it in burning buildings to navigate their way around.
Night vision does not see through smoke, as the smoke simply reflects all the light back and it would look very bright.

Thus, you should not be able to see the awesome in the third picture, and the smoke shouldn't be this blinding wall in Thermal vision.
