Begun questioning whether I should even bother chatting in pugs, I don't think most people have VOIP turned on. Do you have it on?

i have it off and even made a thread in the feature suggestion section to add a special title to those who have it off, by analogy with 'hearing impaired'; 'broken radio' or something

I use voip all the time. Call out enemy locations, potential flanks, lrm fire locations, ect. Some people respond and some don't. Most of the time I see people move to help or intercept. To be honest though your voice might not be clear to your team. I know I've had people talk that I can barely hear and only realize it because I see their names on the bottom of my screen. I keep using it because when it helps it really helps.

Ever since I tried gears of war 1 on xbox voice coms I have never turned it on in any game ever again.

I really don't need to hear squeakers, granted MWO is older on average but I'm sure it still applies.

Looks like about 75% - 80% have it on, but only about 10% - 15% actually use it.

It's not really that bad..........only had maybe one or two incidents where I wish I'd had it turned off, most of the time nobody says anything and it's quiet anyway.

I used VOIP the other day for 2 play sessions.

Then I turned it back off again.

I think I'd get banned if I just left it on all the time.

One round I had a 5 kill game while singing "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight" on the mic the entire time horribly.

Or talking to people on outside TS with same hotkey, that really pisses people off. Talking about cereal or something for 5 minutes and some 55 year old guy just finally can't take it and gets on mic and is all "SHUT THE **** UP SOY YOU ARE HOLDING DOWN YOUR KEY" and I don't break cadence and just interject 'shut up nerd' and carry on.

Yeah I'll just get banned using it I'm pretty sure so I don't bother.

Also the one time I was like "YOU ******* ******" to a guy he was like "I'm new!" in chat after he dies 5 secs later and disconnects and never accepted my friend invite and now I fear he is crying in a mental hospital after uninstalling and going postal IRL.

Doesn't the speaker phone icon thing disappear on the scoreboard if that person has it disabled?

Yes, I said that in my first post in the thread.

Even if you don't use it to speak, you should have it on to listen.

There's just very obvious things like a number of the team ignoring warnings that we're being outflanked in large numbers, or telling people where a fleeing ecm mech is and people still going in the opposite direction etc etc I dunno if people are simply ignoring the warnings or not hearing them at all.

Does an icon light up bottom middle of your hud when you attempt to communicate?

I listen, but I don't talk. Aside from the likelihood of saying things I'd regret later, the mic I have is a little desk thing that varies from game to game as to whether it works at all or broadcasts nothing but shrill static, and even in the ones where it does reflect what I hear in the Microsoft test function (which does not have the shrill static) it generally requires some specific tweaking in the game's own settings to be properly audible.

This is possible in other titles, like SC2 and Warthunder, because they have these fun little things called test channels, that let you hear what you sound like to other players. Now, I realize you probably don't need to have what a test channel is explained to you, but PGI apparently does, because MWO doesn't have 'em. I'm not going to subject 11 other players to my mic tests in a live match, and even if I were willing to then making adjustments based on their feedback would be hit and miss because I can't hear it myself. If I were ever to be willing to use the thing in a public match, I'd need some means to set it up first.

Comm rose would be a better solution for pugs anyways- it's the itunes of team coordination, making it so easy even the most disengaged teammembers will sometimes use it to mark targets or call for help. It also handily crosses language gaps with different localizations for each client, and works regardless of what hardware the end user does or doesn't have.

About half of the time I hear someone use it, I wish I couldn't...

Tonight it was,"Go stand on their base, what are you doing!" while 4 enemy mechs are standing on their base and I am in a Spider, and the last one left.

I also love,"Don't chase the rabbit!" while I, in my, um, rabbit, chase a light off of our flank...

I never use it to talk...

I had it on one time. It was an accident, i swear! It was the day the patch dropped. I logged in to play a match and i hear mouthbreathing coming from my speakers. Turned it off that day and have never turned it back on again.

And i won't turn it back on either. I call out incomings or flanks in chat, if you can't be bothered to read "enemies in c4" then you probably couldn't or wouldn't listen on comms anyway. I also don't play with sound very high, if at all, as i usually have some kind of background noise going on because Bob's Burgers is the **** and mouthbreathers on comms are just normal ****.

:D

I have it turned on to listen but I don't talk that much, partly because people don't listen when folks do talk and partly because I don't want to annoy my other-half with game chatter.

It's on and I listen... I rarely put on my mic and speak though. Any game for that matter. I'd rather quickly type it, like 'b3 2 meds inc'
I get harassed enough about my lisp is real life. Dealt with one too many people in that regard. Rather not have to deal with it online as well. :(
