Always on. Listening.

Talking for:
Calling out flanking maneuvers
Calling targets, components, etc.
Warning of strikes, etc.

Not used for:
Being a general moron
Allowing everyone to listen to the craptastic music i'm playing in the background
QQing about how my team is a bunch of "noobs" and how I'm dead, they're not, and it's their fault.
Starting political/religious/crazy debates while people are trying to call out components, flanks, etc.
Various other equally dumb reasons.

I listen but I'm too afraid to speak so I type instead.

I have it on but if I'm in solo queue I'll be listening to the radio in the background and likely won't be able to hear anything said on Voip. In CW I'll listen and talk though.

@all those people who think VoIP should allways be turned on:

I never missed it in MWO (I turned it off when it was implemented into the game). All you need in a pug is situational awareness and a really OP tool (its allmost cheating) - the Map - since 98% off all pug matches follow standard tactics these days its pretty easy to predict where the enemie will be and even if the enemie does something surprising - thats why you should allways have an eye on the map and your teammates (like - hey a friendly in another sector just lost 20% HP, that could mean there are enemies) ...

Apart from that - I work as a consultant - that means I spend all my day either on the phone or in meeting telling people what they should do. I don't want to do that in a game nor do I want to listen to some 12year old wannabe commander who thinks he is a master of the universe ...

I have heard very few 12 year old commanders (the ones I did hear made polite requests for movements or light strategic suggestions), most of the wannabe masters of the multiverse have been the first to die and are old enough to have know better than to scream outlandish demands into the mic.

I agree, but some games I will be the only one using VOIP and I feel like I am talking to my self. Not one other person on the team can say ok or rodger. Or say don't go over this hill. Voip is there to help your team. There is also a mute for those trolls out there. I use it when applicable.

I would use it more if it worked for me. But it doesn't, so I don't.

I disabled it after it greatly reduced my system perfomance and there was only white noise and bad talking on it.

I always have it on. I'm not able to always talk, but I am always able to listen. I don't know what others' real experience is, but overall, mine has been very good. Unfortunately, there are seem to be a LOT of players that don't listen, but haven't unchecked the VOIP box. I find that those who do use it tend to be respectful and generally have very good ideas. Out of all the drops I've had with VOIP on, there has only been one time that I had to mute someone because they were just broadcasting a stream of unintelligible gibberish non-stop.

Those who don't use it, I wonder how your team's experience would be different if you did use it if you were able to. I know some of those who posted in this thread are very good players, but don't appear to want to give others the benefit of their experience. The team's loss.

I must admit never having played on an Xbox with comms, so I don't know how that experience compares with MWO, but when a group of pugs has even a couple of intelligent, experienced people using comms and sharing intel, my W:L is tilted to the win side, and I have a lot more fun.

For those who have a hard time hearing, I actually turned down a lot of the MWO sounds and muted the music completely and turned voip up. Only very infrequently now do I have a hard time hearing someone.

I don't have a mic, but I like to listen to orders and chatter in VOIP and respond by typing, so I type a lot.

80% of the time VOIP is very very useful.

But the rest of the time, and I can't fu*king stand this, you get these self appointed arrogant fu*king "leaders" who shout orders. Who made you general, boy? I've even herad people say things like "get off my comms" when someone calls them out on it.

I understand you need to validate your ego somehow, but an online game is the last place I want to meet you fu*kers. I get plenty of you in real life, while doing business and while doing things that matter to me personally. I takes patience, persistence and diplomacy to work with you as*holes and the last thing I want is to listen to you in a place I go to to relax and have some fun.

Thank god for the fu*king mute button. Case in point communicate in VOIP politely and if you want to give orders do so respectfully. Otherwise I'll mute you and do the complete opposite thing to make my point.

I always lisen, I usualy go with that insane strategy sugested by someone, just to see if it will work, and I ocasionaly speak too.

I don't try to lead anymore, since the PUG's lisen to commands about 12% of the time. (its frustrating)

I wish everybody used it and we always had a competent drop commander, but hey, I guess that's what unit-play is for..

I WILL report you for beeing abusive
I WILL report you for beeing disruptive
I WILL report you for beeing a giant deuche
I WILL type "gg" at the end of a good match.

My experience has been much like Mailin's. I always have it on, but I rarely talk. About the only negative thing I can say about it is that about half the time that someone does actually say anything at all on voip, I can't hear/understand them. The overall game sounds wash out the voice for me. But I had figured that was just me, as I'm severely hearing impaired, one of the benefits from 8 years active duty service. But I don't think I've had a single match so far that I've needed to mute anyone. I guess I've just been lucky. I'll play with the audio settings as mailin suggested, maybe that will help.

That's odd, when I suggest ideas by typing people are often on board with it, very often. I'm surprised it works so much. I don't know you, but are you certain its not your approach or your tone of voice? People don't like random strangers acting authoritative.

I'll hazard a guess and I can try to read from the way you formulate things you could be one of those people. I don't try "to lead", "PUGs won't listen" suggests to me you have a very firm aprroach.

You mention your drop commander. The same approach to comms as in organized play simply won't work in PUG for the aforementioned reason. You don't get to be the defacto leader, you giving orders is not a given. We don't care what you do in organized play, we don't care how good you are or if you're a drop leader and what you do with your buddies. Yet A LOT of people just run in thinking they can run the show with an attitude to match.

If this happens I NEVER follow orders, you're not my leader buddy, you're some random kid in front of a computer. If however someone has a normal tone of voice I'm ALWAYS on board no matter how dumb I think it is, it just might work if enough people do it.

Again I don't know you, I don't know how you approach this, but my hunch is it might be this.

I suggest a very modest approach, not giving orders, but suggestions in a calm and neutral tone of voice, if you can muster that try it a few times, see how it works.

Your internet/VOIP/TS has nothing to do with your fps. Your ping maybe?, but not fps.

I had used VOIP everyday, but now I cannot talk as my laptop is dead and the desktop has no mic. I listen though.

It does and can take a hit to your CPU, your audio input is compressed locally before its sent out, this takes processing power also all the incoming comms need to be played back, this is also the job of the CPU first soundcard later. If you have a normal system it won't be noticeable, but if you're just on the edge of playability those few frames per second might.

Nope, don't use VOIP. Not a fan of voice communication in video games.
