Call of Duty: Black Ops had an interesting mini-achievement system: Merc Contracts. If I remember correctly, you had to use in-game currency to buy a contract for some particular small set of events (headshots, explosive kills, x kills with a particular weapon etc.). Each one had a short-term timer (some were # of matches, others were # of minutes) and you had until the contract expired to make the small achievement. Succeed and you got a minor payout of in-game currency. Fail and you lost the money used to buy the contract in the first place.
It wasn't grand, but it did lead to some short-term streaks of non-meta play, even if only temporarily. It also felt a little like I was actually accepting a challenge that was within grasp in the next 4, 8, 12 or 24 hours (not 10,000 assists).
That sounds nice. In MWO it could be simple daily contracts such as killing an IS/Clan/Light/Assault mech and the payout could be something like 100K C-Bills.
