Bap Confusion

I believe that BAP kills one enemy ECM for the whole team and provides sensor bonuses and the ability to detect shutdown mechs only for the user. I've had three people insist that I have it backwards, but then how do I get the counter-ECM bonus?

It grants a target data acquisition bonus, too, and allows the user to target a shutdown mech (within that same range, and within LoS)... If the user targets that shutdown mech, then others can share that target lock as normal.
With that said, if it's true as hinted on Twitter that Paul is working on ECM, that could all change soon.

You're right, they're wrong.

I believe you have to actively target the ECM mech within 240 meters for it to counter it.
Don't know if it's still the case. (I haven't ran Streaks, or LRMs on my clan mechs since November.)

I believe that's still the case.
BAP counters 1 enemy ECM, CAP counters 1 TARGETED ECM. BAP also gives targeting bonuses that clan targeting computers give.

I once used BAP to find the last enemy mech shutdown in the corpse of a larger mech, using the corpse's heat signature to mask his own.

BAP:
increase base sensor range (800 meter) by 25%
increase target info gather (paperdoll) by 25%
detects shutdown mechs within 120 meter
automatically counters one enemy ECM, always counters the nearest ECM
CAP:
increase base sensor range (800 meter) by 25%
increase target info gather (paperdoll) by 25%
detects shutdown mechs within 150 meter
counters one enemy ECM but must be locked on the ECM mech to provide counter.

I hate to say it, but using Sarna to judge what BAP does is erroneous for MWO (as Sarna specifically states that BAP cannot counter ECM; only inform the user that the user is being jammed).
MWO does not conform to the lore nor the rules of Battletech in regards to anything related to ECM or what counters ECM.

CAP supposedly requires lockon to counter (going to be testing shortly). "Zellbrigen." Chances are strong if you're trying to lock onto an ECM user you're already targeting him anyway. Though Spike does give a good situation.

Don't really care what Sarna says (though I'd like to see e-war totally overhauled!) as things currently stand CAP does NOT require locks to counter. Sarna shouldn't even be brought into this thread, for exactly the reasons you stated in your first post.
Sarna has no bearing on equipment effects in MWO.

Referenced reasoning is the supposed reasoning given for why it was ever claimed that Paul/Russ said that CAP would require said lock to counter.
Well that and "1 ton CAP is OP" being the other.

But, it doesn't require lock on. I don't recall them saying that, either, but I may have missed it. Regardless, it doesn't require lock on. Hell, requiring lock on to counter when you can't always lock on because of ECM is absurd anyways.
Also, "1 ton CAP is OP" isn't any different from "1 ton ECM is OP", etc, etc. But I'm not really interested in what reasoning was, only what the actual situation is.
CAP = BAP in the game right now.

What happens when I equip BAP/CAP on an ECM mech in MWO? Do they function separately or are there bonuses/penalties when the 2 systems are housed together? Been trying to read up on it but most information is either out of date or contradictory.

You get the bonuses of extended sensors, faster target information and you can detect shut down mechs. However the BAP/CAP does not counter ECM any more. You need to use the ECM counter function for that functionality.
