I mean why not? Have weapons that are designed for small mechs that only light mechs can use, like micro lasers. I know there are weapons like an AC/20 that a Lolcust cannot mount, but there could be weapons that in theory have huge recoil that only an 80+ ton mech can handle.

Have heavy gauss that only heavy and assault mechs can mount. Sure, they're "light" enough to be mounted in an under-engined medium, but restrict them by weight class so the big big guns can only be handled by the big big mechs.

Thoughts?

No.

I could kinda understand a sized-hardpoint system (especially for the second-line Clan Battlemechs) if you really had to, but class-restricted guns are an instant "lolno" in Battletech.

But I mean...and AC/20 on a raven just makes me shake my head. That cannon should make the mech tip over, or take leg damage on the side it's leaning to...

Hollander and Urbanmech both come to mind; AC20 and Gauss on 30-35 tonners.

That's not even a particularly good build, nor common.

Doesn't really work in this game like that.

Though there has been an argument for hardpoint sizes, such that for example you couldn't just replace an AC/2 with an AC/20. But I would seriously doubt they'd even entertain that by this point in the game's life. (Though I'm planning on doing this with my own BT related game)

I somehow think that MW4-style sized hardpoints is a cool idea but this only restricts bigger guns mounted on undersized slots and this is against what you said first on the post.

EDIT: for example, make Gauss and AC/20 to have completely different "weapon slot shape", maybe like 2x3 for AC/20 and 2x4 for Gauss. Give HBK-4G's hunch a 2x3 slot but give Grid Iron and Hollander's shoulder mount a 2x4 slot.

I think it would make sense on the Clan IIC Battlemechs, as some kind of counter-balancing measure to their customization liberties and Clan tech advantages in one package.

Trying to add it to IS mechs at this point would be a clusterfudge that might not be worth it. Omnimechs on the other hand might be cool if they were exempt from it, because people always ask "Why would I ever use an Inner Sphere Omnimech over an IS Battlemech?" This would answer that question...

It is a good idea, and one PGI could have capitalized on to counteract art/model related shortcomings. A much better solution than quirks and ghost heat.

Not true. 100 ton Daishi X is armed with a pair of ER Micro Lasers.

That's a simple matter of available tonnage. Even the tiny UrbanMech is armed with AC-20 in BattleTech universe.

Even the Heavy Gauss Rifle can be found on medium 'Mechs in BattleTech universe - for example on Hollander II.

Dunno, maybe, it would be a bit sad if you couldn't do troll builds like dual AC20 cicada anymore. I think my position is that the hardpoint system itself is limitation enough.

On the other hand sized hardpoints kinda make sense thematically and is a way to differentiate mechs built to carry a big gun from other mechs.

You could perhaps have a soft version of sized hardpoints, where taking a weapon unfit for the hardpoint gives you a penalty of some kind. Maybe a heat penalty to account for insufficient housing and dissipation. The problem with a system like that is that it would be another drawback to IS tech, as it wouldn't make sense on omni mechs, and we don't need a nerf to IS mechs.

Everyone has already said it: From the Hollander to the Hunchback to the Charger, Battletech is filled with mechs mounting weapons bigger or smaller than one would anticipate, running the full gamut from biggest-gun-on-smallest mech to smallest-gun-on-biggest mech.

The nature of putting forth ideas like this is that sometimes they go down in flames. Not trying to be a ****, but BT doesn't really support this idea.

I mean, don't get me wrong, rolling around at 97 KPH with my ac/20 - SML cicada 3m is awesome, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Cicada's legs are like twigs.

Sized Harpoints - there are Lights with Gauss and Assaults with Small Lasers in Battletech - Weigthclass based will not work.

But we have fluff that says that certain weapons, like Gauss, need special treatment to be mounted on 'Mechs (although perhaps this fluff doesn't extend to the game itself). If we had recoil mechanics in this game, it would be cool to see that the Hollander can fire his Gauss more "smoothly" compared to the other 'Mechs.

If your mech can carry it and use it then why not.

Recoil Ples PGI. It's simple physics that a low-mounted AC/20 in a 100 ton Atlas torso would have less of a recoil effect than an top heavy high shoulder-mounted AC/20 in a 55 ton lolohawk.

I' ve been pushing for some recoil since Poptarting was king... If you're airborne, and you fire a gauss, or take a hit from one, you should pretty much be dead. You will never land on your feet, and mechs aren't built to fall on their asses. I would have much preferred this to the crippling of JJs we wound up with...

But, the idea in the OP contradicts a number of stock mechs, so, I disagree with it.

In Lore, even th mighty Fafnir had a pretty high chance of falling on its ass if it fired it's heavy gauss :P I don't know if the Hollander II suffered from this or not...

Only if it moved (or didn't brace itself) like every other mech using a Heavy Gauss.
