So I had one of my favourite MWO moments ever today. I'm running with my Locust in upper city, scouting. And I see a red blip on the radar. I run over to investigate and I'm not playing any music, so I hear the footsteps of the enemy mech. And I don't just hear footsteps, I hear a bunch of clanks as the mech is tearing a path through the terrain. I hide behind a cover and suddenly a Dragon painted red comes charging around the corner, crashing through a light pole and uprooting a bunch of trees, like something out of Jurassic Park. It just looked absolutely horrifying from the low and fragile vantage point of my Locust cockpit, as I look up at it. It brushes against the corner of a building and sparks fly off!

It's crazy how much it improves immersion to have destructible terrain, but the extra details of sound and sparks add even more to it. This game is more immersive than ever, and I really look forward to all MWO maps getting this treatment. Hopefully they will add more sounds to differentiate different kinds of objects that you're crashing into, maybe even different speeds too. Maybe we can even get some screenshake when we crash into stuff, and a brief reticule shake, like when you use your jump jets.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any cool screenshots of the red Dragon. But here are some other cool screenshots.

New River City itself is quite good.

I just got out of a game with my Awesome 8Q. Me and some pugs formed a pretty tight battle line forward and left of the nuclear cooling towers. We weren't too far from base, but far enough to where a lone Timber tried to cap (or be a distraction or whatever) Me and a few allies backtracked to deal with the timber, my Awesome is a tad hot with 4LPL and 3SPLs so I stood behind a bunker while an allied huginn and jenner basically harassed him out of the base area. As he comes around the corner he's sparking and clobbering all over the building. It was an awesome scene with the added SFX and sparks.

I ended up ripping his torso off, after we died we all reformed the battle line and won the game.

10/10 would actually enjoy the other bad maps once this treatment gets done to them.

I agree, the new River City is by far my most favorite map. Sadly though I can't see it in its full glory sense I have to play the game on low settings. However, I know that this is my problem with my machine, not PGI, and as such am going to upgrade my POS OS and graphics card.

Even with my crappy machine, the new River City is still amazing!!!! Can't wait to see what PGI does with the rest of the maps.

It was... sorta. But then they fixed the EBJ death animation. Now it's back in limbo. :D

Right now River City is on another level in terms of map design.
Well done PGI.

The downside is that other maps like Mordor and Alpine seems like they came from a 20 years old game.

Yeah, I LOVE the new sounds - I hope the building and mech hits get upgraded with screeching sounds eventually too.

I'm a little iffy on the collision model with feet though - it feels weird sometimes when i'm walking over open terrain and a wild *CLONG* appears.

PGI starting to take advantage of the engine more!

The old maps were so standard/simple in comparison to the new river city, I mean even just enhancing the textures and water effects is one thing, but adding day/night cycle and better environmental effects e.g. lighting/smoke have really really upped the bar.

And tree's actually have the potential to offer cover now - since they are shootable objects.. ..imagine the luck if you are a light ducking through trees and that one ac20 shot that could have killed you, instead shoots down a tree! booyah! [Edit.. .."imagine.. ..as in it doesn't. Maybe one day?"] Well um, a bit of 'visual cover? :P

Really riding the RC wave though, there could be issues and room for improvement such as the FPS drops, but it really is a much much higher standard. Exceptionally excited for the new forest colony and frozen city maps, it is the kind of improvement and level of quality that will bring players back to the game :)

I keep getting killed on the new river city because I'm to busy looking at all the pretty graphics. :)

For now, anyway

Don't get to excited its just one map... they need to redo pretty much the entire game CW and all for this game to stay afloat.. Nothing but smoke.

So what happens to the shot/s that hits the destructible items, as far as was aware it explodes on impact....

As I understand it, the tree falls down but the projectile goes on its merry way.

Don't know about you alistair, but that immersion factor slowly changed to an annoying factor in the first couple of hours... clang, dang, clong... all the time. Its a bit over-done.

Also, footstep sounds were there from the very very beginning.!

To much CoD with mechs and to litlte Mechwarrior...no way to really get immersed in it.

Id find it much more immersive to just be with a litlte 4 man lance doing a PVE coop campaign. Where we can move tactically and its not all just wash rinse repeat, nascar or corner humping......

Mechcommander 1 I find more immersive...

I was walking through that new river city thinking of various PVE modes and ways that map could really be immersive and its awesome...but actual gameplay on it...was same ol MWO.
