So I thought I'd ask... if anyone knows why I'd love to be informed.

I was watching the preview of the Arctic Cheetah's cockpit, and I couldn't help but notice 3 7 8 monitors that have this "AUTO DETECT (NO)" on these brand new mechs. Same goes for the Shadow Cat. What's up with the cockpit clutter?

So I ask myself, "Why? Why are there new mechs, with so many monitors that display the same useless text?" Was there recent talk about what they are for sure going to put in that I missed? Even if they put in the "mission kills, heat sink, ammo status" screens... leaves a lot of unused cockpit clutter that doesn't need to obscure our cockpit view. Yes I know there are mechs with worse fields of vision... but these are a brand new mechs with a lot of time between then and now to realize "maybe we don't need 2 useless auto detect screens obscuring vision."

So yah, just wondering. Not that it really compromises my view, more so than reminds me every time I play that it's one more thing that has yet to be addressed.

If they'd given up on the screens they'd be avoiding adding even more of them, I would think.

That would make sense, so I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

I can't wait for Steam's take on that.

"So... what is with these monitors that all say they are useless but that hang in my way?"

Frankly, the idea is relatively obsolete outside of specific things like a command console interface. Various evolutions of the HUD have made standard display screens redundant, inefficient, and a dangerous distraction.

PGI isn't stupid. They've been doing this for over a decade, now.

They correctly realized that an online game needs to market on potential as much as anything else. The monitors are there to represent a potential idea - something that could be. That something that could be is a reason to hang around and to continue to support the effort.

They probably won't ever do anything with it, but it's not like they would come right out and say that. It would kill the dream. There will always be something else that is a higher priority, a programmer who was in charge of that who is no longer around, etc, etc.

MS Paint. 10 min.

Just six static images but it's better than the nothing we've had for 3 years.

Imagine if we can put whatever image we want in the monitors, and PGI can monetize it. ;)

The message was supposed to say "No Signal", but due to PGI liking to change their fonts every so often (it's a yearly thing), it broke the actual intended message.

So... working as intended™.

render to texture isnt hard. first time i saw it done in a game was in quake 3 arena (the expansion i think). i implemented something like it in a freespace mod i did years ago (it took me a couple weekends). it boggles the mind how a "professional" game studio cant make this do something. at least cover your ineptitude with some static animations/images.

its one of the plethora of things that makes me think that pgi has not one coder on staff.

Quoting this because liking it wasn't enough. This was my exact thought as I watched the preview videos. Why?
We've been told they are dead, they won't have anything on them. I don't care if its an easy to use building block to make the cockpits with - Take (or make) a blank sheet of metal and reuse that instead of these dead monitors. Make them post it note boards with funny reminders or something, anything, would be better than these dead video screens.

They're still adding in knockdown animations too. Soon™?

I don't know.

I once talked about how we could have a zoomed in view of the map that shows the range of the seismic sensor/ECM/BAP/AMS on the monitors.
This way it would be easier to see your immediate surroundings and see more accuratly where the seismic contact is and make certain your teammates are under the ECM umbrella.

But what happend? Attitude was pretty much "No. This would delay the release of more important features."

Let's start a threat with ideas for funny placeholders in the screens.
