It actually makes sense now that I think about it. We're playing BT in Time lapse. So, while we see the match taking place over the course of 15 mins, it's actually taking hours for our mechs to move and shoot. BT fans rejoice, the game is playing as intended. We've just been playing it in fast forward all this time.

Okay, I'll be serious now. I believe the day/night cycle could use some adjustment.

First of all: I think the new River City is awesome and I also think the dynamic time of day setting at the beginning of a match is awesome.
Well done! And all that.

BUT:
Am I the only one who is terribly annoyed by the changing daylight?

I think it does more harm than good and is very irritating for the following two reaons:

1.)
The (subjective) impression is:
- I drop on River City at night 60% of the time and only 40% of the time at daylight. Preferable would be something like 80% day, 20% night.
- When the game starts in the night, it takes ages until it is finally dawn and by then the game is mostly over anyway
- When the game starts at day, after a few minutes it's dusk and I'm forced to turn on night vision for the rest of the game.
In short: I feel (subjectively) that I have to play with night vision 75% of the time on that map.
Maybe it's just 50-50 in the end, but given it should be something like 80-20 (= night is cool, but only occasionally, not all the time), even 50-50 is too much.

2.)
I find it very confusing that a couple of minutes real time pass by like several hours of real time.
Wait, what?!
See? Confusing.

My suggestion:
It's very nice that you can code dynamic day time and we're all very proud of the new map.
But a single match only takes 5-15 minutes anyway and the next one is just around the corner.
Having a dynamically time of day at the start of the match that is kept for the next ~5-15 minutes is dynamic enough.
No need to add super-dynamicity and annoy everybody with it.

Therefore: keep the changing day time at the start of the match, but please turn off the dynamic change during the match

Well, do you know what planet River City is on? It seems to me you are assuming it is Earth. Did you know--not all planets rotate at the same speed as Earth? Perhaps that world rotates once every hour.

Then again... if it did... the centripetal forces of the rotation would probably fracture the planet in half.

BUT

This is a videogame. Video games, like fantasy, only have rules defined by your imagination. ;)

Isn't there some sort of agreement amongst all the IS houses & clans that no combat at all actually takes place on Terra itself? Therefore by definition we can't be fighting on earth, all the battles are fought elsewhere.

Well, up until the Word of Blake violently wrests control of Terra away from Comstar, and then at the end of the Jihad when Devlin Stone's coalition finishes the Word.

For those saying it could be because the planet spins fast, if that was the case everything would fly off into space.

For an Earth sized planet you start losing everything at the equator at one day every 2 hours (0.012rpm). Obviously that varies with planet size and other factors, but it still means that the game speed couldn't happen on any habitable planet.

It's a nice effect, but it looks and feels silly.

I didnt take the topic seriously, but a good point was made. 50 - 50 for night and day is a bit to much, if it is indded that way. I dont know really for sure.

Can we just get a F***ing flash light, or some headlights for our mechs? And why does Thermal Vision such horrible range, with night vision just as bad. Maybe they could improve night fighting effects a bit more before rollin the Time of day stuff to other Maps? or slow down the rate of time change another 25-30%?

I'd rather they fix the gigantic 8 meter tall grass first...

Heat vision is good for fog and dust.
Night vision is good for night.
Throwing that out there.

Now the idea behind the day and night cycle is cool, but I don't like how it will, say, go from dark at 4:00 AM to looking like 6:30 AM in a matter of minutes. It is just... weird.

time should pass in real time (IE, 1 minute = 1 minute) and it just chooses a random time of the day to start at

Sorry, why can't an alien planet/space body have shorter periods of day and night? Is everything fought on Earth?

The problem with night maps is that some players will have settings either in-game or through their video card software that will allow them to see better than other players who do not tweak their settings.

The time goes so fast it's insane. That's my only thing.

That and the game is always night time , just like the mega fog on forest colony (bad fog, just a gray hue)

My settings are normal in game and in my video card, my monitor is correctly color calibrated (necessary due to my line of work). Thus, it looks exactly as it should.

I have no problem seeing on night maps, either night in RC now, or RCN back in the day.

Maybe your monitor is set up incorrectly?

Just think if all maps get day and night cycles. Then we will have night maps all the time what fun.

"when" all maps get fixed

veridian bog will be hectic at night time

also i vote a big fat no to turning off the cycle

slow it down perhaps, but dont turn it off

I haven't found that it's not annoying or confusing, it's just tough to appreciate the current time because it changes so quickly. 6 hours over 15mins is just way too fast; that's just under half an hour of daylight every 1 minute...

Some changes I'd like to see:
- 8 time of day options, rather than the current 4 options (dusk, dawn, night, day).
- 2 hours over 15 mins, rather than the current 6 hours. (8 mins every 1 minute vs. 24mins every 1 minute)

I like subtle details as they all contribute to a more lively and interesting scene.
Time of day slowly changing over the course of the match is one of those details, so that's why I'm opting to keep the dynamic time; just not as drastic as it is now. This gives us 3 night, 3 day, and 2 matches that are either sunset/sunrise (half dark to half light, or vise versa.).
