I felt genuinely bad doing this. I don't understand how PGI can do this on a daily basis. They must be sociopaths or something. No empathy or remorse or shame.

Yeah, if PGI cuts any(more) of the unseen barrels short, then I don't want to re-see the unseen. I still want the Yen-Lo-Wang's original AC20 and K2's long guns back. Lasers, PPC's, Whatever, should ALL have long barrels, unless they are canonically short like the hunchback's AC/20 or Atlas's hip-mounted autocannons.

Relatively sure, given the history of Battletech and HG, that CGL knew this going in. And thus, I highly doubt we would be seeing it at this stage if they had not already planned for that eventuality, or didn't know something we don't know. Like perhaps HG is broke after the Hasbro fiasco? (we can always hope) Or there was some finding or wording in the legalese after the last bout that CGL decided they could exploit.

Would someone please tell me what this HG/Hasbro thing is about?

I said something similar a couple pages ago.

If the barrels for the Rifleman, Warhammer, or the PPC/Laser 'hands' on the Marauder are given the 'custom geometry' work we've been seeing so far, be sure to bring a stick and some marshmallows, because the flames will be real if these mechs don't get done properly.

My guess is because its now no longer HG, but HG and Sony.

HG got into bed with Sony to produce the robotech movie, and I think had to have them come in on SOME of the distribution rights they claim they have to them in order for them to make the movie to begin with. (Because Sony isn't about to make a movie for the sake of someone else.)

This means if they are going to bring a lawsuit against CGL, they will probably have to drag Sony into the Lawsuit as well, and with how Sony pictures has had a string of poorly preforming movies and the Movie production branch coming under greater scrutiny (especially after the embarrassing e-mail hack,) I think the last thing that sony pictures WANTS is to be dragged into a legal dispute for a project that still has yet to enter full production. (They have only licensed it for release, it has not entered production yet.)

So basically, by attaching itself to Sony, HG might have attached itself to a partner wanting to stay FAR away from any legal issues (especially now that they are tied at the hip.) And with Sony being the bigger company, they might not be physically able to play IP bully any more when Sony doesn't want to get dragged into anything for a movie it still hasn't fully backed with. (Hell a lawsuit might make them adverse to even fund the movie further then licensing given that they are now in bed with the franchise.)

And we've always known that the only leg HG had to stand on was their wallet. Right or wrong, they could afford to litigate anyone else into the poor house. Maybe they are going broke.... I'll avoid buying Palladium's minis so they don't get the royalties. :D

You guys think HG is going to sue Catalyst? I don't think so. Either catalyst has an agreement with them already, or they have sufficiently changed the looks of the original mechs to satisfy harmony gold and/or any copyright lawyer. They have re-envisioned the unseen before, at least twice before. Check TRO: Phoenix, and if you look up the various mechs in google, you'll see the evolution of design they've gone through. I think PGI could do the same thing - that is, re-envision the mechs, but they have a lot to lose if they mess up - and so do we. I do believe Catalyst is opening the floodgates, though. If they can run the mechs the way they are shown in the pics posted, then PGI can license the art from them. That's how it will happen, if it does.

Bare bones explanation. Fasa way back when used art work of several anime works as the designs for what we call "Unseen" mechs. Fasa was under the impression they had permission from the people in Japan who these designs derived from. Harmony Gold, the company who held the US license for these images, said uh no, and forced Fasa to stop using the art work.

Long more detailed version

That much I know, I'm talking about the recent HG/Hasbro thing that a couple people have been mentioning here. Bishop Steiner being one of them.

Oh, I believe that has to do with the upcoming live action movie and the licenced toys that are going to follow? Maybe or the 2013 court case where HG sued Hasbro and lost?

Rifleman is crouching, there is no crouching in MWO. it is a valid tactic to duck and hide from missiles and weapons fire especially if your a large assault O_O

Let's just imagine it's legged and is currently on the 15kph speed decrease, while stumbling around to rebalance the gyros, or whatever

In 2013 Hasbro made a crossover GI JOE Transformer that some may say looked like a Veritech fighter. Much crying and suing was done by Harmony Gold but the case was dismissed.

Okay I thought that was what it was, but it sounded like there had been something more recent.

which is why we are leaving it up to catalyst games to poke it for now

There's been a bit of discussion about that, here, in Off Topic. Basically, HG filed a lawsuit against Hasbro because they feel that one of the Transformers looks too much like their artwork, especially with the new toy that was released.

That's why that lawsuit is being mentioned in this thread. If HG has something to stand on, there, then they'll probably be able to nail Catalyst (and thereby Battletech), again. That would kill any chance of us getting Unseens.

However, if Hasbro was finally able to shove a ball-gag down HG's throat, then that might be why Catalyst is going forward with what they're doing; and that would bode well for the old HG Unseens to appear in MWO.

Sadly, though, the HG vs. Hasbro lawsuit has been exceptionally quiet in the news, so we have no idea what the results are . . . or if there are any results, yet. Regardless, as people have said in this thread already, that lawsuit may have caused something that's given Catalyst the ammunition to make the rather ballsy move that they have.

The first ever mech I ran in TT was a Warhammer. The second a Marauder. I was 12 and my GM was evidently very kind or very merciful. Or he just knew enough about the appeal of these mechs to hook me for good. In any case, I would gladly pay for them, as I have for every pack to come out. I would be vastly more eager to purchase a pack with these mechs than I have been for any other pack.

Sure, there would be teething pains. Guns too long; too short; where to put the hard points. But mother of god seeing the Marauder...

I'd love a Marauder it looks cool, for some reason I'm drawn to the air plane with legs shaped mechs, I think it's cause they seem the easiest to pilot, hate shooting terrain so much with underslung arms.

Then you're doing okay, the MWO forums actually are a race to 0 SAN.

I'm surprised it came to such a low-profile ending. However, that also explains why it wasn't plastered all over the news, because it really doesn't create any solid precedents; and it didn't really come to a decisive ending.

The dual dismissal (where both parties agreed to just drop the issue), while squashing Harmony Gold in that instance, still leaves them open to come after Catalyst on the unseen issue; because they never reached a court room. So, unfortunately, the outcome of a Catalyst vs. Harmony Gold suit is still up in the air, if/when anything is filed.

This is exactly what PGI did to my Firebrand !
