Well, to be honest, not every single model looks worse than its concept art. Mechs like the Catapult, Atlas, Hunchback, Cataphract, etc look just as good in-game as they looked in the concept art (if we ignore the dynamic weapon geometry for some of them) and some like the Banshee and the Orion, actually look BETTER in-game than their concept arts (at least in my opinion).
Of course, it doesn't change that some mechs got completely butchered, like the Quickdraw. I'm all for screaming at the modelers for making the mechs look worse than how we expected them to look, but let's give credit where credit's due, because SOME of the mechs do look pretty nice.
(Black Knight is not one of them. Neither is the Centurion with its width, Enforcer and its head ,Quickdraw's uhh, well, all of it. I'd also add the Direwolf and Warhawk, because they look (and animate) pretty bad, in my opinion)

don't forget the Mad Dog. NEVER forget the Mad Dog.
As for mechs that came out nearly identical or better than the concept art?
Locust
Commando
Spider
Jenner
Firestarter
Raven (better)
Panther
Cicada
Blackjack
Vindicator
Hunchback
Shadowhawk
Wolverine (concept art looked like crap, too)
Griffin
Dragon
Catapult
Thunderbolt
Cataphract
Orion (much edgier than the pillsbury doughboy concept art)
Zeus
Stalker (It's a walking blimp. Concept art wasn't exactly intimidating either)
Banshee
Atlas
King Crab
IMO all came out fine.
And then you got the Jagermech, where you win some, you lose some, as the mech came out a little blockier and the cockpit was smooshed flat, but the pre-dynamic weapons arms were like 10x better than the stubby little pew pew arms of the concept art.
Overall, the Clans.... I have more trouble evaluating, but I dislike how most of them look, period. Do give props for the Nova. Looks great.

I mean, model/animation wise it's pretty good, but the dynamic geometry is bloody awful on it.
Missiles are an absolute mess and the lasers are stubby as all hell.

Also, that looks GODLIKE. Just wow, it looks a lot better that way. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.

all your answers lie within.......
also, part of the laser issue comes from the arm modeling.

I'd agree with most of them, yeah.
Except, maybe for the Thunderbolt, which mostly stems from the fact that it lost the awesome arm-mounted laser it had in the concept art, for a tiny unpainted box instead...
Also, either its torso is smaller or the legs bigger than the concept art, proportion wise, which leads to it looking much more like a square.
