Snipers are useless for the same reason lights are... oh wait, lights are extremely useful. Snipers are useful for punishing enemies. The SHD-2K with 3ERLL is very good

I tried the AC/2 again on an Urbanmech while grinding robots this weekend...it made me pretty sad. Even the +15% ballistic cooldown quirk couldn't make it usable.

Is there ever a good reason to equip AC2s on anything? They run laughably hot, hotter heat per damage than SPLs on a Firestarter or Arctic Cheetah. (due to quirks) This already kills one of the reasons why ACs are even used; heat.

They have appallingly high tonnage for the damage they inflict, (7 tons for AC2 + 1 ton for 150 damage worth of AC2 ammo) require continual facetime to have respectable DPS, and don't even do that much at range anymore.

Ghost heat was just the final insult. It finally being lifted did nothing for a return to the battlefield unfortunately, because people have since found that laservomit is superior in almost all instances, especially considering tonnage and ammo requirements.

AC2 is bad, and Paul should feel bad for killing it. Just like MGs.

Wait... does Paul just hate low tonnage ballistics?

Sure, deathballing can work. It can be very effective. It's a sad testament to the fact that even though this is taglined as a "thinking man's shooter", a "tactic" that in fact requires about as much thought as a typical sheep requires to maintain a herd, is touted as being "the most effective".

Clearly PGI needs to take a long hard look at their objective based maps. Because I don't know about the rest of you, but when acting like a sheep becomes *the* best tactic to win, it doesn't make me feel like I'm playing a "thinking man's shooter".

Alright, stop. Bullet time.
  • Gauss rifle has 660 meter range. You get a 10% range bonus with modules. You get a 20% range bonus with the JM6-A. You have full damage with dual gauss at 858 meters. So you're right, it's not thousands of meters. It's not 1300 meters. But engaging the enemy at ~900 meters is fine.

because nothing is useful 100s of meters away in MWO, much less 1000s... you cant even shoot past 1300 with gauss...

Actually, Gauss is the only weapon in the game with 3x range. The JM6-A with range module has a 858 optimal range, and 2574M maximum range.

It can theoretically 1 shot a (fully armoured) cockpit at ~900M (whenever 1.5 falloff damage happens), at that 17% chance.

Otherwise, I find sniping at range incredibly boring. That's all CW was, so I've pretty much stopped playing it.

Dakka in general is just a bad idea except in extreme cases...you can argue that dakka whales are good but tbh Unless its a steamroll game I rarely see a dakka whale last the entire match. The facetime you need to get that dakka downrange means you get melted. Two my my 3 crabs are Gauss builds. Ive tried everything under the sun of my 3rd crab and nothing works well....I have 2 dakka whales, they never see the light of day but ive driven the leg actuators off my dual gauss/laser Prime.

Yeah I agree. Its not so much that its the best, it is just the easiest and doesn't require as much thought or skill.

That's just because you want to get close with your Wubshee easy mode :P

On a side note, ran a variation of that last night ( 3LPL, 5 MPL) and holy hell that thing is ridiculous!

That's right.

But which is worse, an easy button at 200M, or an easy button at 1KM?
One has more risk.

Well, 200m is more risky, but also a lot easier. Popping someone with dual gauss in a consistent spot is not that easy at 1000m if the target is moving and isn't a Whale or similar. Getting a hit isn't hard sure, but trying to pinpoint say a Timber Wolf's CT when it is moving around uneven terrain, hitting jump jets, etc... that is a tall order.

.....The only fallacy I see here is claiming that deathball tactics are the only valid tactic in the game.

lol. because comp teams totally split up when they stomp you right? this community needs to get real. if you want soething viable besides deathball, lobby for game change. There is nothing else.

That is not true. As an easily accessible example, you must have missed the MWOLN finals matches last week. Not a lot of deathball brawl bushes, and an overwhelming number of longer range engagements. While they aren't spread out across the map all the time, they are not in a "deathball" for most of it.

......Errm.....how many comp teams do you see death balling against good players while on defense in CW? Breaking death balls is the name of the game. Furthermore, unless you are playing with your own team....you have NO IDEA what order of battle you are trying to death ball with...I've been charged by ravenous LRM boats before....and it's the HEIGHT of stupidity to bring your LRM 60 death machine within 300 meters of my 5mpl, ultra 10 build, because SOMEBODY used the word coward...sorry, but you need to play to what you have on the field and not some fantasy comp team.
