Been playing very little lately, so I tried to watch some gameplay videos to pull me back in...Somehow ended up watching some very early footage from the game and got nostalgic. So many things changed since then, some for the better, some not so much....

-The biggest thing is the visuals. Somehow the game looks worse now. This could be just a matter of taste...I'm not sure...It seems that the game got a lot more "cleaner"...

-Remember the old mechlab? I mean the the one that had the engine of the selected mech humming in the background. Call me crazy, but I really miss that. :)

-UACs not jamming, no ghost heat,LRMs with wavy flight patterns, Different color hues for the lasers..

-We didn't have working pilot skills and modules, but we didn't need them either...

-8vs8 matches on the four basic maps with only 8 mech chassis. (people used to run dragons back then...i know..crazy right?)

-Oh...and do you remember the glowing atlas eyes? I remember you could see how many atlases the enemy had on forest colony from the spawn point, because their gaze penetrated everything! :D Oh and the atlas was not a joke back then...it was THE assault mech.

-COLISSIONS! -ok...it was a clusterf*ck, but had some funny moments when everyone was trying to shoot the mech that teleported 10-15meters when it got up. Mostly we ended up shooting friendlies.

I'm gonna be honest. Never really cared about battletech before playing MWO (boo me all you want), so everything was new to me. And the mechlab full of placeholders instead of actual information didn't help either. "What's the difference between SRM and SSRM? Why would anyone use AC2 instead of AC20? What's an XL engine?"

So many things were unclear, but I'll probably never enjoy the game as much as I did back then, even if I was ignorant as f*ck. I got hooked on the dual UAC5 cat K2 back in 2012...and never let it go ever since. We've been through some tough times (like manual unjamming of the ACs..remember that phase?) and it got fine tuned since then, but it's still my #1 mech. Maybe I'm looking for that old feeling i will never get back ....from a simpler time. Or maybe i just forgot to take my meds, and overthinking it?

What's your take? What do you miss the most?

Slow paced gameplay. Less speed.

And the graphics.

We had stomps back then. But you i saw some good comebacks.. Could be matchdeciding when a you were outnumbered.

Now it's jus less scenarios.

One ECM. Atlas was king. When LRM was upped nobody went brick and flew off without ECM because if you got spotted you would get LRM-ed to death.

some reasons these changed...

-bugs, performance issues, geometric / collision issues, etc are part of this (for eg keresnky statues on river city were removed due to being annoying until recently). Other problems can be because a lot of the people hated the dirty look sadly, no one wants the 'ugly film grain' or the dirty glass or the muck everywhere...
I do see what you mean- but hey the new forest colony, CW maps, and the River city map is breath taking and I would take that over closed beta any day

-I do see some appeal to it, but I always found it a tad clunky... I do wish more sound affects and interactions though to the mechlab that isn't just normal mechlabing stuffs...

-depends? UAC's when first added had MANY different things occuring in a short time for most people to bond with it...
you got the...
"As soon as I jam, I can't be unjammed"
"I can't jam, lololololol"
"Oh, you need to press -bla bla bla bla bla bla bla- keys to unjam me, or just hit 1 button of a macro to do it in 1 nano second"
and what we got now...

-I can see the appeal of that... would likea revamped tree doe ^^

-8vs 8... I alwasy miss em, back when if you are good you can carry your team hard enough to push it to victory or single handedly kill more then half the enemy team, now you are at the mercy of how bad or good your team is.... which is technically what a team should be... so kinda working?

-gib eye glow back.

just my comments and understanding on your stuff...

My greatest thing I miss from Closed beta? Don't have founders catapult...

besides that, not specifically closed beta but beta in general- back when flamers were usefull... back when MG's had 1 dps instead of 0.8... walking can help more then running due to heat... ammo explosions... etc...

Atlas being the king.

"You know, many still regard the Atlas as the king of the assault mech weight circuit. but with the new-fangled Sunders and Templars, it really gives them a run for there money..." -Duncan Fisher: 3066.

No matter how much time passes. the Atlas will always be my king of the battlefield. No matter what kind of new assault mech rocks in old or new steps in, no matter if it's a longbow, banshee, victor, direwolf, mauler, blood asp, hatamoto chi, or behemoth. Sunder, Templar, Mad cat mk II, or Deimos or bloodkite.

The atlas will always be my king, and it will always be the mech to punch the hardest or lead the mightiest of charges.

Atlas may no longer be the best sniper mech or LRM mech or laser vomit or gauss mech anymore like it may have once was in MW: O, but it is still one thing for certain- a near-death experience as a juggernaut.

Did the mechs become faster? I thought the game only felt faster because of 12v12. (and my recent obsession with some light mechs)

What? Did they take away the founder mechs? Or you mean how useless the poor Atlas has become?
(I'm only asking because Nightshade24 mentioned he misses his founders cata...and come to think of it...it's been a while since i saw founder mechs on the battlefield...)

*snip*

I'm not saying the changes were not justified, i just miss the old way...even if they were flawed.

And again...that humming in the mechlab was just too sexy

What I miss from Closed Beta:
  • Inverse kinetics
  • Being able to see on forest colony
  • "Chugging" engines after they took critical damage
  • Swarm-pathing LRMs
  • Glowing Atlas Eyeball
  • Single heat sinks (sorry. the game was better in 3025 tech)

As it should. You had to be at the right place at the right time (and with a credit card :D) to have one of those. Oh and you had to blindly trust the devs to dish out that kind of cash for a game nobody knew which way was going.
