Best: The core gameplay is terrific

Worst: Lack of a clear direction. CW is an abject failure, but eSports doesn't seem really workable either and neither is getting the full "this is our future" push that something needs.

Best part: the potential for customization with all the different mechs & builds; this could be a little more refined with better balance on weapons, mechs, quirks, etc. but it's still the best part of the game (to me) even then.

Worst part: the excessive grind that interferes with the customization being fun.

BEST: the combat

WORST: Pricing model that I believe actually hurts PGI's income stream for game improvements

I'm new(played just two days so far)

Best part: The game feels very similar to the one used at Virtual World back in the 90s

Worst part: No melee attacks, where's the axeman? I want to chop another Mechs arms and head clean off :)

If that were the case tho theyd have changed it by now. Unless theyre so stiff-necked proud that theyd rather run the game/company into the ground than change the pricing (Like a game company called Flagship Studios)

Best:

The feel. Combat is weighty, visceral and awesome. The Effects are fantastic. The mechs are incredibly well designed, and the maps, especially the new River City and Forest from the look of it, are great.

Worst:

Artillery. Not an objective observation - I just hate it, passionately.

Not really. They could be making enough money to support what they're currently delivering without making enough to improve the pace and scale of development. And they could be satisfied with that.

But they're also depending on whales to keep buying mechpacks. That may have an expiration date. Maybe expanding the playerbase with Steam launch extends the longevity of the model. Maybe not.

I wouldn't go that far. That was a lot closer to a sim.

True, but a lot of that just has to do with your setup.

Top 3/Bottom 3 (in no particular order):

Best:
  • Sound. When I first tried MWO, the awesome STOMP-STOMP, WUB-WUB-WUB, SWOOSH-SWOOSH was what most immediately impressed me.
  • Mech designs. By and large they are fantastic. I recently picked up the latest TT boxed set, and literally burst out laughing seeing how awful some of the designs are, by comparison with MWO.
  • Core gameplay / mech controls. Very solid.
Worst:
  • New-player experience. Which is, "PLAY NOW", go straight into the grinder, and with an inferior mech, but good luck eh? No guides, no novice-only queue, no AI opponents to practice against, no nothing. This should be the #1 priority.
  • Lack of variety in game modes. Basically three death match modes. Anything that could be done here would help. E.g. new maps, other than 12-vs-12 games, new game modes. Referring to public queue here -- I understand in CW this is even worse.
  • Quirk system. And specifically how it promotes one-dimensional builds. This leads to a lack of variety in the builds, and ensures that the builds you do see are boring.

Best:

The art work is amazing! The mechs look fantastic Alex is the man.

Worst:

No long term progression/end game. There is no reason to continually pilot a mech unless its in the meta or you are in a group and need one of the 3/3/3/3 roles fulfilled. I would be more apt to purchase a mech if there were a reason to pilot it after it was mastered, I refuse to pay for a mech because I gotta have it.

I mean I have so many mechs with 500k+ xp, what good is it? The modules are not endgame equipment.... I would like to see this skill tree GREATLY expanded for all mechs, and make use of this XP.

The best:
design is great
gameplay feels good enough
overall balance is quite OK

the worst:
new player experience vs long time motivation (including skill system and xp)
time-to-live is too short

While the gameplay and balance is decent, the time to live is very short, even in a 1vs1 situation.
The gameplay with light/med mechs in a 1vs1 is much more fun than anything heavy/assault, because the big alpha strikes make up such a big part of your survival/death.
Adding up multiple vs fewer targets and you get killed very fast.

Surely, using more teamwork, sacrificing and distracting to win a match can work, but it feels so much better to survive a fight than to win a fight where you died in very few seconds and you think that you could have survived longer in a light than an assault mech.

And then adding new players into the whole trial-by-fire gameplay (which hopefully will be better with the new skill system) is very hard on new players and for teamwork, even with Voip (which not many are using).

I hope this was not too long for this threat. :)
