best part is its retroactive from January 2015 stats
so there will likely still be chaos , but the nice smooth type of chaos

Two thumbs up if it is anything close to what I expect.

I wonder about the match time waits. The current throws random collections of five tiers together. The new system will exclude Tier 4 and 5 from matching with Tier one. As a percentage isn't that a massive reduction in possible combinations?

I assume player skill is normally distributed with the mean being Tier 3.

true but 1, 2 and 3 will likely see each other as would 3, 4, 5
so there would still be a fair bit of flexibility ... making huge assumptions here ... so the match maker shouldn't struggle to much

either way its awesome, im sure there will be lots of fine tuning of the system in the future
but its a system tailored to our game not silly win loss nonsense and thats awesome

Do we get to know what tier we are in? I'm guessing most likely not, for um reasons.
Definately excited to see how this pans out over the next few months, once its had time to settle players into their respective tiers.

You may be disappointed... some of you may be getting what you are wishing for.

From the patch notes:

Quote

The weighted formula and action triggers will not be released publicly. However, we are currently debating the merits of making all players’ respective Skill Tier levels publicly accessible. Part of this potential public Skill Tier listing is the possibility for opting-in or opting-out of listing your Skill Tier publicly. Tina will likely be putting up a poll to gather feedback about which option the community feels would be the best choice for handling public Skill Tiers.

So we'll have some input on whether to make skill tiers public.

If it goes from 6-8 sub 200 players to 4 sub 200 average, I'll be happy.

I'm with you on that man.

I still think this will break with 3/3/3/3 and the group queue more often than not though.

Wait times shouldn't be overly affected because I'm sure the 20% of the active playerbase will be assigned to each tier accordingly.

I would be interested to see what my PSR tier turns out to be. Probably somewhere between tier 2 and 3 depending on how tryhard my piloted mech builds are.

It's a far cry better than ELO, though using Match score to determine a players quality or performance should have been a no brainer from the get go. But hey..... Hindsight.

Personally I'm happy to see this change..... finally. It probably won't mean much for the average player sitting at Tier 3, but at least those much higher or lower should have a far better experience.

Yeah there's gonna be disappointed players on both ends of the spectrum, we can only each hope we aren't one of them :P

If a players' team wins, and the player did well during the match (achieving a high Match Score), the player will rise in skill rating.
If a players' team wins, but the player did not perform well (achieving a low Match Score), the player will not move in terms of skill rating.
If a players' team loses, but the player does exceptionally well (achieving a very high Match Score), the player will go up slightly in skill rating.
If a players' team loses, but the player performed well (achieving a high Match Score), the player will not move in skill rating.
If the players' team loses, and the player performed poorly (achieving a low Match Score), they will drop in skill rating.

well, who would doubt that pgi are idiots

they introduce performance into the elo... i.e. you shouldn't care of the win, you should care of a high match score, it's better to do something which will more likely ensure a high match score for you than something which will ensure win but you don't get a good score

btw, it will hurt light pilots, especially with supportish builds

I could only hope that we finally do make them public.

As PSR is based on match scores with a bit of weighting for W/L, it strikes me as a more accurate measure of how much you contribute.

Wouldn't a support-ish build usually have a lower match score than a straight-up killing build, thus causing the support build to face weaker enemies? That seems more like a boon than a bane. :P

I figure that we're still gonna see only four scores tracked as currently setup. Light, Medium, Heavy, Assault.

My only concern is if I do well with, for example, my Timbers or Hellbi and rise in Tier over time; I'm gonna have a harder time in my Protector or Flame, since those all fall into the same Heavy bracket.

At the very least I hope that I can see my own Tiers. If I'm Tier 5 in my Mediums, I would want to know so I could work at improving there. On the flip side if I'm tier 1 in my Assaults, then I know I'm doing something right.

but if they make that e-peen optionally visible and people will frown upon at those who doesn't show theirs and poor low elo pilots will cry in a corner and leave their commandos for timber wolves

no it wont hurt support builds
inclusion of win/loss in this way is more of a anti-get carried thing rather than full basis stat determination
note that the break down includes going up in rank even on a loss and down even on a win

so if your support build is doing its job then it will be increasing your teams chance to win
thus your scores will go up more often
so if you support your butt off and still lose you can still rise in rank

In general, I wonder if this will finally end the "Carry Harder" expectation that the game sometimes has, also known as the "I'm having fun" effect.
