Please stop using the term meta to express "overpowered". It means "after" / "beyond" / "above" in an ABSTRACT way (like meta study: a study analysing other studies. Or meta gaming: Gaining an ingame advantage by an outgame action, e.g. lag).
It does NOT just mean "super" on some measuring scale.
From an objective point of view, everyone not getting the abstract nature of the term must be considered [dezgra].
I don't care if that includes 90% of the MWO community.
Read and understand the definition. Your capability of doing so is a pretty good indicator [you are a surat].

And by meta I mean beyond, as in beyond the spirit of the game.

At the very least when Is see people use words or terms completely incorrectly, and then base some kind of illogical, irrationality fueled diatribe on that - then I know I can save myself a few minutes of wading through it. This goes for things beyond this game as well.

Just show a swastika to someone. While it was a Native American symbol and before that used in the Far East, show it to someone today and it represents race wars and genocide.
Common usage.

You clearly dont understand the term META or what the OP is talking about. He never inferred that meta meant overpowered.
To stay competitive, you have to follow the META. Its true in any game.

The proper definition is all well and good, but I think the reason the term has come to mean OP here has to do with the character from Red vs Blue.
Freelance Agent Maine/The Meta was an unstoppable powerhouse in RvB, and now, when people come up against mech builds that they are unable to win against and/or are the easiest way to win, they are dubbed "The Meta".

You will have to play against people that actually earned it through skill and experience, and they will beat the crap out of you.

The truth is that words evolve through use.
In gaming terms "meta" is a slang reference, not to the metagame itself, but to the cream of strategies produced in the metagame (which is where your "correct" use of the term is, the game beyond the game), and it has been used this way for a long time.
It isn't some new and clueless way to use the term either, we have had it for board games way way back with people talking about "chess meta" and so forth.
It's not even incorrect even if you would accept some silly absolutist perspective on language, something no linguist in the world worth her name would do.
It's a natural derivative, first you have the metagame (game beyond the game) in which players interact to evolve their game, in there you have certain strategies rising to the top for both in game and metagame reasons (one example of a metagame reason is midrange build domination in MWO, not because of factual superiority in game but because it is the safest bet given expectations about both enemy and friends behaviour), and then those strategies are what you need to be aware of to succeed, they are the top strategies of the metagame, or "meta" for shorthand.
The mech builds best suited to carry those strategies out are referred to as "meta builds", which is completely in line with the general use of the term given how you arrive at it, as described above.
It's true that a "meta build" isn't exactly the same as a mech being strong, since there might be mechs or builds that would be stronger given another metagame, but with such a straightforward metagame as MWOs it is very likely to be practically synonymous most of the time.

I've been using less Meta lately. Guess I just don't wanna be surrounded by it myself, and lately I've been getting bored with Boating all da lazors.

Get with the times grandad, language moved on.
"Recently the term metagame has come to be used by PC Gaming shoutcasters to describe an emergent methodology that is a subset of the basic strategy necessary to play the game at a high level. The definitions of this term are varied but can include "pre-game" theory, behavior prediction, or "ad hoc strategy" depending on the game being played. An example of this would be in StarCraft where a player's previous matches with the same opponent have given them insight into that player's playstyle and may cause them to make certain decisions which would otherwise seem inferior."
On topic, can't blame people for using what are the strongest (or seen to be) builds or characters. It's been happening since people started competing in anything.
