I started a thread about this in the General forum, PM'd Dennis De Koning and got an answer.
  • PGI is interested in the possibility of selling cosmetic custom geometry upgrades.
  • Every bit of cosmetic custom geometry (CCG) will come with a single set of texture, such as the chrome-painted skull of the AS7-S(L). In other words, it won't change colour based on how you paint the rest of your mech or what camo patterns you have.
  • It needs to be relatively simple. To sell a completely redesigned retro-Timber Wolf based on old artwork is too much work. We're talking about simple upgrades, like replacing a head, a shoulderpad, an armour plate or a hand.
  • PGI needs to know what kind of upgrades we're interested in, and what mechs they should handle first.
I tried to make this poll to the best of my abilities. It may be flawed, but try not to hate me for it. The important thing is that everyone who's interested shows their interest and we get this show on the road.

Note: At the risk of making the poll biased, please keep in mind that selling this stuff for MC is probably the only way PGI can justify spending lots of time on it. If nobody's willing to spend MC, it seems unlikely that it will happen.

PGI has made no promises, but at least it's being talked about now. So let's make it happen!

Yes. Yes. A thousand times YES. I would pay $$ to customize the look of my mechs. Just like cockpit items, camos, and paints, they could easily be broken up into:

1. common cbill items
2. MC-only items
3. bundled early adopter specials
4. weekly challenges
5. tournament prizes

I don't agree with #3, but the other ideas are very good. I think PGI needs to limit the amount of cool stuff that is limited to wildly expensive mech packs.

I completely agree with the MC bit. Anyone who thinks its fair to PGI to get these for cbills or totally for free is fooling themselves. Pgi needs more avenues of income, this and other ideas would be perfect for that.

Voted. Thanks for the poll.

For the statistics: I would be willing to dump up to 50$ into customizing my Mechs

(Oh and I would dump WAY MORE money into an alternative 3k-4k texture resolution client. JUST SAYING)

As an addition: a 4th color for highlights(shoulder shield highlights) and weapon barrels that is not affected by the current camo pattern

would be nice to know if there is a option to have a smoother transition for the used colors. For example the "Mountain Camo" instead of hard lines between obsidian black to battleship grey; and battleship grey and titanium white - colors should fade

both should allow this kind of color:

I am voting yes for this.

I don't think I would ever pay for something that is purely cosmetic, but understand other do and I think it should be there for them. Also this is exactly the sort of thing that is perfect for making money from, better than mechs as it has no effect on game play.

I have put don't know for the mechs. other than atlas and dire wolf and tiberwolf, because those are obvious

I think it really fits in with the decals, so I'm totally for it. If enough people will pay MC for cosmetics, I think it should be done, even if it starts with something small like an alternate Atlas or Gladiator face. (I mean, if Atlas can have glowing eyes, clanners should get some too, quiaff?)

You got brutally OP weapons and invincible light mechs already, not sure if you need cosmetic options too.

This was a joke.

You're talking to me as if I were one of them.

I'm not. But I still think it would be cool. But I do pilot a lot of clan mechs. But I guess you already knew that.

A list of what i'd definitely buy (even if i don't have the mech, i'd buy the mech just to buy the cosmetic for it):
-Atlas heads + glowing eyes (especially if they glow blue/teal because FRR) (i'd also would love to get different colour decor in Atlas cockpit interior, it's currently bright red and i'd love to change it to blue, because FRR).
-Battlemaster bubble cockpit
-Centurion mohawks + shields
-Catapult's pointy nose on non-(F) mechs
-Humanoid fists for the Thunderbolt + More angular cockpit
-Round head-turret on the Wolverine.

Heck, i'd buy the mechs just to be able to buy the cosmetics for them.

Yes! I've campaigned for this forever. Thoughts:

I'd pay MC or c-bills, but realistically this should be only.

I'd like to (eventually) see multiple options per mech, with several equippable at once. Say, one per head/arm/leg/torso. With 5 slots, you'd have a hell of a range for unique geometry between even players who are buying custom geo.

This is why its a great opportunity for the artists and modellers. Sure, they decided on a certain look for the mech, but maybe the modeller really liked an alternative look. Now you can introduce the mech with the intended look, AND the other ideas can be put to good use too.

Things like iconic features that didn't make the cut (bubble cockpit) or ones that where changed for whatever reason (K2 PPC barrels)... Now they're options again!

I would simply LOVE this kind of level of mech customisation, and would pay MC to get it.. not that I pay MC for warhorns or paintjobs now..cose i'm broke.. But when I get some spending dinero, I'll be buying that stuff...

If that means I can put a classic shark paint job on the "snout" of the cockpit, or different looking missle pods on my timby.. I say yes!

Thumbs up! I'm waiting for this kind of mech customisation since I started playing this game right after it went open Beta.

Would love to be able to put custom unit decals on mechs, PGI been saying this would be a thing for years.

As long they don't go overboard and break the immersion, I support this. Alex will probably need to be involved since it's his creations being modified and therefore his modifications will probably fit and look the best.

However, please please don't go all TF2 with this.

They shouldn't do custom geometry like a laundry list for each mech. It should be whatever ideas they come up with. For example instead of makgin 10 heads for the atlas and then making 10 for the spider w.e. They should make heads as the ideas come up, that way each idea is creative and original and not forced.

Nothing stifles creativity like being forced to do a laundry list

I can't even put camo schemes on my Wave I invasion variants, but sure, stained cockpit glass sounds really great.

I also think the retro maddog lasers are a bad idea, because I fell all pulse lasers should look like the retro lasers. Now all IS and clan lasers from small to large, ER or pulse, look the same... there is no feel for size. And that also results from inconsistent weapon scaling across the board.

What would be really useful is adding unit decals...

In that case, you're in luck. I don't think I've seen anyone suggest that they should do it like a laundry list with the same options available for every mech. And I don't think that's how PGI would do it anyway.

MC is fine as long as they don't let it spin out of control like their permanent camo unlocks.

I know this might not fit exactly in this thread, but the one thing I've always wanted is an actually customized cockpit and hud.

Things that I can actually see while I am playing my mech.

Would it be all that difficult to let those of us that are willing to pay for things, purchase 1 (or even several that we can swap between) cockpit/hud combo that we can customize and outfit to our own liking then use for all of our mechs?

You can keep the silly vanity item overlays if you want to have them in there, personally I have little desire for them at their current price point against the 130+ mechs I own - but I spend a lot of time riding in the cockpit playing the game and want to actually have my display be unique and functional for me.

Most of the current cockpits are quite nice designs, but things don't work in them still 3 years down the road and this is the place you spend 99% of your game time looking out through - yet the 1 place you have the least amount of freedom to customize.
