Shouldn't 'Mechs with arm mounted weapons be able to raise them and fire like this?

It would be a nice way to resolve a huge number of "low hardpoint" issues on many mechs. Just have to find a way to make it not the go-to mode or else we'd have mechs walking around doing the thriller 24/7 like zombehs. It should at least lock your arms to the torso reticule as if you had armlock on.

Low mounted torso guns though are still boned. Not much can really be done about those.

Based on that pic, shouldn't our mechs also be able to fire lasers or SRMs out of their butts.?

If you raise your mechs arms, you can only run half as fast. You can justify it as the mech being off balance with its arms raised. This would help some of the bottom tier mechs with low arm hard points.

could make it work like bracing in battletech.

only weapons in the extended arm would be able to fire. weapons in the torso and other arm would be disabled while bracing.

in addition to the arm being extended up higher it could also give you an added zoom factor for more accuracy at long range.

Quote

Bracing: A BattleMech standing behind a hill or building that is of a height somewhere between its waist and its shoulders may set one arm on it and use that to brace the other arm, much like twelve foot tall metal sniper. While bracing, a 'Mech cannot fire weapons mounted on its legs, torso, or the arm used to brace the other one. The act of bracing requires very precise adjustments on the part of the MechWarrior, and is equivalent to the 'Mech moving thirty metres. Bracing provides a great deal of stability, and therefore makes it easier to hit the target with weapons mounted on the arm in question. It is possible to brace with only one arm, although this is somewhat less stable. MechWarriors often combine bracing with careful aim, and occasionally called shots, to devastating effect.

I arms are raised, arms and torso become locked for targeting.

How about this...

Shouldn't there be some point to putting weapons in the arms at all?

Seems like everyone is putting all their weapons in the torso if at all possible, only using the arms if they need extra hardpoints or if the arms have really high weapon mounts. All those Hellbringers, Summoners, Thunderbolts and PPC Novas running around with zero weapons in their arms.

If arms are going to be locked at the hips, then at least reduce the torso twist speed to the point where having weapons in the arms is actually useful.

I have been wondering about this for a while myself, it would solve a lot of problems. It should have drawbacks though and some of the things you guys have touched on are pretty good. Props too you guys.

On the other hand, arm height is what makes mechs unique. Some mechs are good for ridge humping, some are better for brawling (lower arm actuators + shielding). Many mechs received quirks just because their arms are low.

I feel that "arm raising" would require too much development work for what it's worth. Just like in Warthunder, they introduced the ability to open the canopy of your aircraft. It slows you down and makes the wind noise higher. Very cool, but a waste of time if you ask me.

A Commando could use a couple more extra armor for it's arms. Raising them won't make the chassis any more viable than it is now.

I do not believe those are comparable. Opening your canopy does not offer any tactical advantage and is just for flavor. If raising/locking your arms gives certain (balanced) advantages and disadvantages then you are giving mechwarriors decisions points. It would probably require a decent amount of resources and should not be something done quickly but it could make alot of IS mechs better.
