An open letter.

You had pre-ordered the Black Knight. It was nice of you to support the game like that. Pre-orderes give PGI operating capital and it helps to keep the lights on. Thank you.

Now, you *did* intentionally order a Mech that has only low-mounted energy hardpoints, just like an Awesome 8Q. You knew this; you saw the concept art on the page where you bought the Mech pack. So, if you think about it.... You bought a 75 ton Awesome 8Q. You may or may not have been around this game long enough to know how the Awesome 8Q was introduced to this game, and how it was rendered obsolete, but I will summarize.

The AWS8Q was an early Mech in this game; it was useful for a while due to its copious EN hardpoints and could mount a huge engine. However, when the Stalker with it's equally-numerous hardpoints that are all mounted high was introduced (coupled with an awesome engine cap at 300), the Awesome was rendered obsolete. The Stalker's high-mounted hardpoints killed the Awesome.

So, here we are, and you have an all-low-mounted energy Mech. If you were here for the Stalker's introduction to MWO, then you know you were buying a non-viable 75 Ton Mech in the form of the Black Knight. It's called "History Repeating." So, you really can''t complain about it.

If you are newer to the game and did not have a chance to learn from the Awesome 8Q, then you may have an excuse to be dissatisfied with your BK purchase, but a limited excuse. You did know that it would be an all-low-energy Mech, and you had to at least consider that before making your purchase. Maybe you thought that it would be Quirked into viability, but that kind of purchasing "hope" is just that - blind hope that what you know is based on poor content would be buffed into something useful.

--------------------------

Overall, nobody who purchased the pack has a right to say that "The Black Knight is worse than I expected" or anything like that because all evidence suggested that it would be a lowq-quality combat vehicle. The only people who have the right to complain are people who were disappointed at the BK design and decided to not buy it.

It is me and my peers, the disenfranchised non-purchasers, who are the only people who were ripped-off because we never got a chance to buy a good Black Knight.

I may be stepping a bit out of line here, but I never found the Awesome to be obsolete compared to the Stalker, it is just different. :P

And personally, only having just tried one BK in the Testing Grounds, I honestly think I made the right decision in buying it. ^_^
Sure, the hardpoints probably aren't competitive, but I prefer to just play for fun. Besides, having to expose more to shoot back just means more reason to stay alert and play smart. :D

The BK does have one saving grace if you're good at heat management, you can get a functional 63 point alpha. The build I'm probably going to use has a 57. 6B, XL350, 2 lpl & 6ml. No endo, just doubles. 1.13 heat without quirks or efficiencies.

I literally bought it as part of the Mauler pack for the player appreciation Zeus, which I'm hoping looks like the one from MaxTech with its armor redesign.

All energy hardpoints, good humanoid hitboxes with an XL friendly side profile, good mobility and 75 tons of armor with internal structure buffs. Yup DOA.

Actually I've changed my Res2 pack to a Mauler pre-order. Support was really cool about it. So recognizing that the BK was intentionally designed to be garbage and every reason to suspect the Crab and Wolfhound will be the same I got out from under the rest of the R2 pack, which was a waste of ducats.

I had the boars head since day one and no matter what people told me about XL400 engine on atlases.....ended up been my best mech because i figured out how to use it....2.27 k/d lol

Meh.

I hold PGI responsible for not being able to balance the game properly. I will criticize them openly whenever I feel like it. Some things are difficult, and I respect that. But some things are really easy, and when they fail to do the really easy stuff, I'll point it out. No matter if I should have expected it or not.

I realized it wouldn't be a good mech though. I'm not complaining. I'll make it work. But I still think the lack of balance in this game is appalling. And here's the biggest criticism:

I'm not saying I would fix the game right off the bat, personally. I don't think anyone would be able to fix this game in one patch. It's a complex thing, I get it. But the pace of balancing in this game is glacial compared to other games. Some weapons go years (that's plural) without ever being popular. That's crazy.

Hey, man - no problem! I personally pre-order all mech packs at their highest tier specifically to support this game and its development. I'm happy to finally be thanked for my contribution - it means a lot! Stay classy, my friend.

So you're mad that you didn't spend money on a product that doesn't exist? Sir, there's no such thing as a disenfranchised non-purchaser - you made the decision not to purchase something. You can't make that decision then complain: That makes no sense.

This is the same thing as saying; "That burger joint over there won't make me a Taco the way I want it." Then getting mad over it for not being for sale to begin with.

I liked the spirit of your post in the opening, but I must say I am disappointed in how it ended.

This is America. I'm pretty sure if you have enough money, you can have the burger joint make you a taco...even if it isn't on the menu.

Honestly the 'comp' group that ***** about high hard points usually only favor one playstyle: peekaboo shooting. Which, if everyone is going, gets really boring really quickly. Personally I like low / mid mounted hardpoints mostly because I like brawling, which this mech is going to be great at. Hardpoint locations don't account for much when I'm in your face. But that's just me.

I did not bother with expectations for it after the Grasshopper. Considering PGI works to keep the designs even remotely close to the originals there is no such creature as a good Black Knight without incredible quirks. Prosperity you are basically saying you would have rather had a different 75 ton heavy. At the time the Marauder was off the board so that means the Flashman and the Flashman is not much better. People knew before there was a poll for BK vs GHR and fought to get it in the game. No one has any right to be disappointed with anything about the BK except maybe poor hit box placement (a flaw most new 'Mechs have). Everyone knew it would be flawed in the context of MWO. There is no excuse to be disappointed or angry. The Marauder is coming, hope that its right torso and long, low body can make up for the low slung arms.

Prosperity I am not sure if I envy or pity the corkscrew logic that lead to this thread.

Currently BK have HUGE CT hitbox that's don't allow him to do anything usefull. He just collecting all damage to CT, do about 100-200 damage and.... die. Pretty nice mech i guess. Clans are glad to see him.

Under-slung arm mounts for the BK were not in the concept art BTW. That really disappointed me. Especially the left arm mount, which is traditionally side mounted.

Why do peope expect anything more than mech porn out of this game? If you want competitive game play go play quake or what ever the kids are into these days. Im loving the BK so far, but then all I'm looking for is a fun, modern mech 'simulation'.
